Description

The Maintenance Apprentice is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of all types of machinery and equipment used in the collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater and biosolids.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, measuring, cutting, and bending wire and conduit using measuring instruments and hand tools, tracing out short circuits in wiring using test meters, stripping insulation from wire ends using wire stripping pliers, and attaching wires to terminals for subsequent soldering. Additional responsibilities will include examining electrical units for loose connections and broken insulation, tightening connections using hand tools, and assisting in the maintenance and repair of all types of machinery and equipment, including pumps, compressors, conveyors, bearings, belts and chains, coupling alignment, gear boxes and bench work. The Maintenance Apprentice will also perform machine operations utilizing grinders, drill presses, saws, and other miscellaneous machines, alter and repair fixtures and tools, sharpen tools, and transport tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to the worksite by hand, hand truck, and/or heavy- motorized truck.

Minimum Requirements

• Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and representatives.
• Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (“PPE”), in compliance with PVSC’s Facial Hair Grooming Policy.
• Basic knowledge of the standard tools, methods, practices and safety precautions involved in the particular function assigned.
• Must be available for emergencies and job assignments on a 24-hour basis.
• Must demonstrate the ability to learn and retain technical information.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position and carry out oral and written instructions.
• High School/Vocational School Diploma or equivalency certificate and possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License
• Minimum two (2) years’ experience in general maintenance.

Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.
