Job Description
Position Overview:
The Machinist is directly responsible for laying out work, setting up and operating machine tools, and performing any dismantling, fitting, or assembly work required for plant maintenance, repair, or installation.

The preferred candidate will have to be fully committed to engaging in safe working practices, driven to learn new processes and procedures, and have the ability to work as part of a team to achieve safety, quality and performance goals.

After successful completion of a 90-day probationary perod, employees have the option to join the USW Local 1. This position works shifts, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. The starting hourly wage is $29.31 plus shift premium and overtime rates, as applicable. Novelis offers excellent benefits, working conditions and potential for career growth. Responsibilities & Qualifications:

The primary function of the Machinist job is to layout work, set up and operate machine tools, and perform any dismantling, fitting, or assembly work required for plant maintenance, repair or installation in a safe and efficient method to ensure minimal production downtime and maximum adherence to environmental and safety guidelines. The successful candidate must have 5 years proven experience and must be able to perform the following duties with little or no additional training:

  • Receives instructions, prints, and work orders from Maintenance Coordinator.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools, adjusting stops, feeds and speeds for efficient machining.
  • Makes jigs, fixtures or attachments required for the job.
  • Selects and grinds tools for the job in accordance with hardness, machineability and other properties of parts to be machined.
  • Machines parts to precision tolerances and specified finishes.
  • Interprets drawings and sketches; plans and determines working procedure.
  • Performs machinist functions in shop or field.
  • Dismantles machinery and equipment.
  • Performs any layout work and makes sketches of parts as required.
  • Transports tools, equipment and material to job as required
  • Assembles, fits, aligns, and adjusts machinery and equipment to very close tolerances.
  • Uses precision measuring gauges and instruments.
  • Calculates and determines dimensions, tapers, indices and other data using shop formulas and handbooks as necessary.

To be considered, the candidate must have:

  • A minimum of 5 years documented experience working in a similar related function.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • The ability to safely and effectively use tools and equipment
