Job Description
Steel America is looking to hire a Machinist Helper for our On Site Machining Department.


We are pleased to accept resumes for the position and are hiring immediately.


This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.


  • Move heavy pieces of office and shipboard furniture, machinery and equipment
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator
  • Stain removal of sidewalks, walls, decks, and floors using chemicals and cleaning solutions
  • Collect refuse and salvageable materials
  • Paint small areas as needed
  • Organize and maintain various departments
  • Load and unload trucks and other conveyances
  • Uses basic power tools to include grinders and drills
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Must be willing to work 2nd and 3rd shifts and overtime as needed
  • Based on the work location, the position may require the obtainment of certifications such as a Man Aloft Certification, Shipyard Competent Person Certification or CPR Certification
  • Must be able to pass security background clearances for multiple facilities.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance
  • Assist in ship board precision alignments.
  • Move supplies and materials to proper locations by hand or hand trucks
  • Gather and deliver tools, products, and equipment to work site/shop for trade employees
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Stack materials for storage
  • Previous shipyard experience preferred
  • Firewatch duties
  • Assist in installation of communications hardware
  • Perform minor equipment repairs as directed
  • Assist in the setup and operation of large portable machine tools.
  • Must have clear driving record in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Will lift and carry trash, steel, scrap, steel, palettes, wood scraps, and all other trash to proper containers
  • Must be able to travel as
  • Complete landscaping tasks such as clearing walk ways, lawn maintenance, snow removal and other incidental seasonal tasks
  • Perform duties such as fire watch, assisting welders and technicians, running electrical cable on shore locations, onboard ships, and other vessels as needed.
  • Complete various cleaning tasks to include sweeping, shoveling, mopping, scrubbing, and/or raking of ships, bulkheads, compartments, tanks, restroom and kitchen facilities, dry docks, railways, parking areas, and all other areas of company property
  • Must be able to work effectively with others
  • Choose appropriate tools and equipment for the completion of one’s duties
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker

This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.


Both 1st and 2nd shift available.


  • Working with presses, floor shaping, forming plates, shaping from templates, marking symbols, doors, hatches and scuttles, rolls, presses and blacksmith shop
  • Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates
  • Laying out blueprints, checking and fitting materials, tack welding of various sub-assemblies peculiar to the panel line and shell area such as decks, bulkheads, side shells
  • Technical training preferred
  • Understand and act upon instruction
  • Working on ship ways with the erection of units and installation of structural items
  • Laying out blueprints and outfitting items
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Install simple systems without templates and blueprints
  • Tack welding
  • 3 or more years' experience in shipyard repair work.
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Experience working in fabrication shop a plus
  • Willing and capable of working on government and commercial
  • Riveted and deck inserting
  • Template creation
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Enter and move through manholes to reach and work internally confined spaces
  • Shop and field fabrication
  • Installation of structural outfit items, doors, ladders, foundations
  • Effective sequencing of assembly and fitting
  • Correct use of heating torches in plate heat straightening and shrinkage
  • Bulkhead and deck inserting
  • Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons report and determine if job sites, particularly those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work
  • Adherence to industry codes, regulations, and specifications
