Job Description
South Carolina Federal Credit Union is currently seeking a Loss Mitigation Credit Counselor III to join our team of outstanding Loss Prevention professionals at our Headquarters located in North Charleston, SC.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Level I Duties
  • Utilize the collection queues, auto dialer system and reports to maintain communication with members who have delinquent accounts on mortgage/consumer loans and document pertinent information appropriately.
  • Stay abreast of regulations, including Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, CFPB mortgage servicing rules, and credit union OREO/ISF policies.
  • Meet or exceed team objective for delinquency and charge off through accounts reviews and communication with account holders.
  • Contact members for repayment arrangements and coordinate receipt of payments.
  • Identify any potential losses on mortgage/consumer loans and make recommendations for assistance or settlement offers to management.
  • Answer telephone calls from internal and external members regarding delinquent accounts and conduct account research, audits and corrections as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with the Asset Protection management and team to control delinquency and minimize credit loss while following established policies and procedures during the collection of delinquent mortgage/consumer loans.
  • Support other team members as needed.

Level II Duties
  • Provide assistance to all other Asset Protections teams regarding consumer loans, mortgages, and credit cards.
  • Maintain Loss Mitigation success log, short sale and mortgage charge off tracking logs.
  • Work the second mortgage report monthly and maintain second mortgage files that are three or more payments passed due.
  • Complete charge off report as needed (minimum twice per month) to ensure all mortgage charged off accounts have been forwarded to the appropriate party for action.
  • Work Delinquent 16+ Day report daily to ensure all loans with assistance given are being maintained as agreed.
  • Assist with bankruptcy collections for second mortgage loans.
  • Monitor charged off mortgage loans while legal action is pending.
  • Complete charge off projections as needed throughout the month.
  • Handle short sale requests from realtors and attorneys on property the credit union holds interest in (1st lien, 2nd lien, judgment).
  • Complete foreclosure analysis on delinquent accounts.
  • Work expired balloon report weekly to ensure expired balloon payments are updated and loans have returned to original contract terms.

Level III Duties
  • Answer foreclosure notices received and update and maintain first mortgage foreclosure notice and legal update logs.
  • Work with Dovenmuehle and assist in the facilitation of short sale offer on first and second mortgages.
  • Act as the liaison between Dovenmuehle and the Asset Protection Department.
  • Monitor loss mitigation and Dovenmuhele’s collection efforts, to include reports and updates of internal reviews.
  • Maintain Loss Mitigation success log, short sale and mortgage charge off tracking logs.
  • Work with Dovenmuehle and the other credit union departments and/or financial centers to handle member mortgage account inquiries.
  • Coordinate with Dovenmuehle on any account updates (i.e. payment in the mail, promise to pay date, hardship request, etc.).
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining all ISF accounts/reports and with the facilitation of any ISF file until foreclosure is complete and coordination with foreclosure attorneys.
  • Complete foreclosure analysis on delinquent accounts and assist in the facilitation of any foreclosure recommendations.
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining all OREO accounts/reports and with the coordination and facilitation of any OREO file until property sold.
  • Handle short sale requests from realtors and attorneys on property the credit union holds interest in (1st lien, 2nd lien, judgment).

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Possess ability to maintain confidentiality and to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • Possess direct work experience researching, analyzing and solving difficult problems.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Possess demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others at all levels.
  • Possess direct experience working with computers with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and various lending processing systems.
  • Possess a minimum of five years of similar or related loss mitigation experience working within a collections department.
  • Possess direct work experience performing intermediate mathematical skills.
  • Possess ability to successfully perform duties in a high-volume, fast-paced work environment that includes interacting with other via telephone.
  • Possess direct work experience communicating professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Possess demonstrated ability to examine and interpret complex information and make solid decisions with exceptional judgment.
  • Loss Mitigation employees must provide required information, register and renew registration as a Mortgage Loan Officer as required by the SAFE Act. Loss Mitigation employees will not participate in activities related to mortgage loan applications until the registration process is complete.
