SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Performs as a journey level locksmith installing, adjusting, replacing and repairing locks and related hardware.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

• Proof of CA Driver License
• Proof of high school graduation, GED or higher. An uploaded photo of the diploma / degree or transcripts (official or unofficial) certifying graduation date or conferred degree is required

• Unit/Degree verification (including equivalency of foreign degrees) must be submitted with the online application as an attachment in the form of unofficial transcripts. Equivalence of foreign degrees must have been reviewed and verified by a regionally accredited foreign degrees review agency.

VACANCY INFORMATION

The district is expecting one fulltime (12 months, 8 hours/day) opening.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Education: Completion of high school education. Document upload required.

Experience: One (1) year of recent full-time experience as a journey locksmith.

Special License or Language Skills:

• Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties of positions in this class include but are not limited to:

• Maintains key system records and issues keys;
• Writes extensive master key systems;
• Keeps detailed records; makes reports;
• Repairs, replaces and adjusts all types of locking hardware and various other fastening devices such as panic bolts, door checks, latches, catches, fasteners, door closers, and locking devices;
• Makes new keys and fits keys to locks;
• Makes parts and special tools;
• Lubricates locks and locking devices;
• Makes service calls;
• Operates tools and equipment such as key cutting machines, code machines, lathe, drill press, grinder and other tools used in forming parts for locks and closing devices;
• Performs other related duties as required.
• Opens or removes locks which cannot be opened by ordinary means;
• Repairs auto and truck locks; changes combi¬nations on safes and vaults;
• Changes locker combinations and maintains records;
• Recommends and maintains supplies and ma¬terials;

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Skills in:

• Operating tools and equipment such as key cutting machines, code machine, lathe, drill press, grinder and other tools used in forming parts of locks and closing devices;
• Safely operating a motor vehicle.

Knowledge of:

• Current building, fire and safety codes;
• Safe working practices and procedures.
• Methods, practices, tools, equipment and parts used in the locksmith trade;
• Specialized locksmith terminology;
• Construction and repair of a variety of makes and types of locks;
• Key code systems and key systems;
• Vendor and outside repair sources;
• Installation, repair and adjustment of panic door exit devices;

Abilities to:

• Plan and organize work;
• Communicate orally;
• Read, understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Exercise good judgment;
• Specify hardware according to current building/fire/safety codes;
• Performs as a journey locksmith;
• Pay attention to detail;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and others;
• Maintain sensitivity to ethnic, religious, cultural and sexual differences.

Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination without right of appeal to the Personnel Commission.
