Construction & Technical Services (CTS) consists of a design, construction and technical team of architects, engineers, elevator mechanics, as well as project & property managers who provide services for time-sensitive rehabilitation, renovations, and maintenance in City-owned properties.
CTS also has an in-house Trade Shop (Shops) that houses all the skilled trades under one roof. These trades provide critical service to all the 57 buildings in the DCAS portfolio and are used from small scale repairs to construction projects. These services include rough and finish carpentry, all types of electrical repairs, plumbing work, interior/exterior painting, concrete, and masonry work, as well as sheet metal and structural steel work and include locksmith services. This full range skill set enables the Shops to provide needed support for the entire portfolio and can even manufacture parts for obsolete machines and equipment.
Under direct supervision of the Director of Shops, the Locksmith will remove, replace, maintain, repair, and adjust all types of locks and locking devices. The candidates' responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following:
  • Set up and change key combinations
  • Keep inventory records and prepare materials requisitions
  • Pick locks open and change keys, if required
  • Open, repair and drill safes and changes combinations.
  • Make keys with or without duplicate and key change numbers
  • Change cylinders
  • Make keys to fit grand master, group master and floor master combinations

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a locksmith; or
2. Three years of such experience as described in “1” above plus education at a locksmith, vocational, technical or trade school approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization or or full-time satisfactory experience as a Locksmith Apprentice or Trainee to make a total of five years of experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of relevant education or full-time experience as a Locksmith Apprentice or Trainee; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent of "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least three years of experience as described in "1" above.
License Requirements
At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a valid New York City Locksmith License. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment."

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to work under limited supervision, to handle multiple assignments with limited time constraints and detailed oriented
  • Certified Locksmith
  • Able to respond rapidly and accurately to requests, and work in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment.
  • Experience with project estimating and project management
  • Demonstrate personal initiative, responsibility, leadership, and flexibility
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
