Job Overview
This position is responsible for beach patrol and patron surveillance of open water swimming areas, maintenance, and grounds keeping of beach areas and parks.

Duties and Responsibilities

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.
- Cleans and resupplies restroom, shelters, and picks up ground trash.
- Maintains the beach grounds by renovating beach sand, weed eating, and maintaining buoy lines and beach area.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Performs maintenance such as painting, minor boardwalk repair, docks, fences, and other maintenance tasks.
- Provides patron surveillance of swimming area and enforces park policies, procedures, and rules to ensure the safety and well-being of the park patrons.
- Responds to distressed swimmers and drowning victims in a timely manner.
- Provides first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to patrons during emergencies.
Job Specifications
- Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use a computer and related software.
- Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts to include weekends and holidays.
- Ability to maintain a current American Red Cross Life guarding, CPR, and First Aid Certifications.
- Skill in administering CPR and First Aid.
- Working knowledge of American Red Cross lifeguard training methods and techniques.
- Skill in preparing and completing reports.
- Skill in American Red Cross Lifeguard techniques.
- Ability and willingness to work outside in a subtropical climate under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to read and understand job related materials.
- Ability to swim.
- Working knowledge of applicable park regulations, ordinances, and swimming area rules.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to swim for a certain distance in a certain time.
- Bending, reach, stoop, stand, sit and/or walk for extended periods.
- Must be fit enough to get in and out of the water quickly
Work Category
Heavy work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds or force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Possession of a current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification; AND
- Must be 16 years of age and current High School student; AND
- Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification; AND
- Possession of a current American Red Cross First Aid Certification; AND
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Graduation from High School or possession of a GED certificate; OR
Emergency Management Responsibilities
In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

- Maintain the ability to pass the background checks required for the position. These background checks may include but are not limited to:
- Child Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect Record Check using the State Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS)
- Sex Offender and Sexual Predator record check using the list maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)
- Level 1 and Level 2 Background screening (Ch. 435 Florida Statutes)
- Criminal History Background Check using Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)
- Possess the necessary job-related license(s) or certification(s) that may include possession of a Florida Driver License (Class E) or an applicable Commercial Driver License (CDL).
