Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate and individualized nursing care for specific patients and their families in the ambulatory care setting. He/she collaborates with practice leadership, members of the patient care team and the patient to achieve optimal patient outcomes.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with all HIPPA laws.
  • Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other patient care members.
  • Provides input to the practice leadership regarding practice needs.
  • Provides competent compassionate age appropriate nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of nursing process.
  • Appropriately utilizes and conserves equipment and supplies. Orders medical supplies and maintains appropriate inventory.
  • Articulates the professional nursing role to the patient, family and health team members.
  • Helps define standards of excellence for patient care: participates in improvement of patient care services in a cost effective manner.
  • Participates in daily activities conducive to the comfort and safety of patients, their families and the practice staff.
  • Attends or reads minutes from all Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center Staff meetings.
  • Assists as needed in meaningful use in EPIC Clinical system as instructed by department.
  • Is aware of departmental hospital policies and procedures.
  • Provides and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Responsible for interviewing patients and preparing them for all cosmetic procedures. Gives all pre and post procedure instructions.
  • Participates in and contributes to performance improvement activities.
  • Coordinates involvement of the patient, family and health team members to insure effective patient teaching including family members as necessary.
  • Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic staff members.
  • Collaborates with other professional and non-professional personnel in maintaining recognized standards.
  • Triage patient phone calls. Informs patients of all lab/path results per physician protocols. Keeps a log of all biopsies and ensures all necessary appointments are scheduled. Observes reports and documents all relevant patient information in EPIC. Is trained and utilizes the EPIC in-baskets.
  • Draws blood as needed. Uses Epitomyze and/or Epic to file pictures taken.
  • Assists physicians in setting up and performing cosmetic procedures within the Massachusetts General Laws.
  • Has trained and has knowledge of all cosmetic procedures, including procedures utilizing lasers.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of and dedication to the highest patient care and provide the utmost service excellence to all patients.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and to exercise independent judgment, decision-making and problem-solving expertise.
  • A can-do, team-oriented attitude is essential, as is the ability to work independently and to interact easily with physicians, other managers and staff throughout the department and hospital.
  • Participates in relevant continuing educational programs.
  • Effective interpersonal communication, organized, and the flexibility to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to lift and exert up to 35 lbs. of push/pull force
  • Has successfully completed the Laser Safety Course.
  • Is an active member of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association
  • Administration of injections

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):

  • Current Massachusetts’ licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse required
  • CPR certification required

EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of an approved LPN program required

EXPERIENCE:

  • LPN experience preferred. Cosmetic and or Laser Dermatology experience preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable):

  • Directly supports the patient clinical workflow within a busy specialty cosmetic outpatient clinic Monday – Friday.
