The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax, and Novato.

Current Vacancies: Two (2) Librarian I and four (4) Librarian II vacancies for a total of six (6) full-time positions. This is a recruitment to establish a combined list that could be used to fill a Librarian I or Librarian II vacancy. The vacancies are:

Librarian I
This is the entry-level class in the professional Librarian series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn public library policies and procedures and to apply the principles and techniques learned from their academic degree or equivalent background.
Librarian II
This is the experienced level class in the professional librarian series. Incumbents function as specialists in major program assignments such as children's or adult services, or cataloging, and are cross-trained for temporary assignments in other specialized areas as needed. Incumbents exercise initiative and considerable independent judgment performing assigned duties including the supervision of staff.
The Librarian I and II provides library services for patrons of all ages in partnership with schools and/or community-based organizations. They actively promote respect for cultural diversity and create an inclusive, welcoming and respectful library atmosphere that prioritizes access and centers social justice.
With guidance from the Branch Manager, the positions design and implement innovative and effective public programs, provide reference and reader’s advisory, offer targeted outreach activities, and provide proactive customer service to enhance our “single desk” model of service. The Librarian I and II possess strong cultural sensitivity and proficiency skills and work independently and in team environments bringing services to diverse communities and promoting educational and social equity in service delivery and programming results.
Bilingual skills in Spanish are highly desirable, but not required.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL DUTIES:
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Librarian I

• Explains library policies and procedures to patrons and staff.
• May direct work of paraprofessional and/or clerical support staff.
• Conducts outreach or on-site programs for various age groups; prepares exhibits related to the needs of the community.
• Conducts reference searches using a variety of database, on-line and other search techniques.
• Prepares reports, information materials and other written materials.
• Assists and advises patrons regarding the use of library materials and equipment, including automated catalogs and Internet software.
• Participates in collection development; suggests the addition of books, reference materials, audio and video tapes, electronic media and other library materials.
• Provides general reference and reader's advisory services to the public.
• May represent the library in meetings with the community or special interest groups.
• Recommends acquisition of equipment and policy and procedure revisions to improve patron service and efficiency.

• Develops and conducts outreach or on-site programs for various age groups; prepares displays and exhibits.
• Conducts general, difficult and extensive reference searches and reader's advisory services; assists and advises patrons regarding the use of library materials and equipment, including automated catalogs and Internet software.
• Plans and conducts programs for specific patron groups such as children, young adults or adults.
• Plans, organizes, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of professional, paraprofessional and support staff; effectively recommends selection of staff, disciplinary actions and other personnel matters; trains staff in work procedures.
• Organizes, presents or oversees presentations of programs, including story telling; selects and recommends books and other materials suitable for the community being served; provides reference services using a variety of media.
• Represents the library in meetings, functions and activities with the community or special interest groups.

Librarian I:
Equivalent to an American Library Association approved Master's degree in Library Science, Library and Information Services or similar curriculum. Course work in the area of service specialization is desirable.
Librarian II:
In addition to the above, two years of professional experience in a public or academic library setting, equivalent to the County’s class of Librarian I. Experience using current library technology in the primary area to which assigned is required.
The Highly Qualified Candidates:
Youth Services(Marin City and Civic Center-San Rafael)

• Possesses public library and/or school library experience
• Recognizes the importance of outreach, communication, developmentally appropriate practices, and continuous learning.
• Has experience with new and evolving forms of technology and is a champion of flexible learning environments.
• Is creative, enthusiastic, flexible, customer-service oriented and can effectively and empathetically assist children, youth, and caregivers from all backgrounds with their information needs and develop innovative programs and services to support the community using a whole-family approach.

• Is creative, enthusiastic, flexible, and customer-service oriented with a strong interest in working with adults.
• Experience working with seniors, knowledge of genre fiction, and programming experience are a plus.
• Recognizes the importance of outreach, communication, and continuous learning.

• Is people-focused, adept at assessing community needs, and comfortable working with patrons of all ages.
• Possesses experience working with Latinx and immigrant communities.
• Is flexible, adaptable and comfortable working in a mobile environment, able to travel to Inverness, Point Reyes, Bolinas, and Stinson Beach libraries and neighboring communities such as Tomales.
• Possesses strong organizational, planning and project management skills.
• Bilingual skills in Spanish are preferred, but not required.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
