Job Summary


The University of Colorado Boulder Athletics department encourages applications for a Learning Specialist! The Learning Specialist works one-on-one with student-athletes who have education impacting disabilities and/or need high levels of support around skill building and academic strategies. Through the creation and implementation of individualized academic plans, the Learning Specialist teaches these students how to be successful in the classroom and in academic environments.


This position is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program. This shall include adhering to the principles of the Athletic Department's Mission Statement, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mission Statement, Core Values, Policies and Procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, the Pac 12 Conference and the NCAA.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Plan and deliver academic assistance for student-athletes with the highest level of need:


  • Work is typically one-on-one with each student on caseload.
  • Create and implement planning designed for student-athletes including study skills/strategy development (note-taking, test-taking, reading comprehension, and time management), motivational techniques, and learning techniques in order to improve the performance and achievement of student-athletes with learning challenges and foster autonomous learners.


Assess, Evaluate, And Support


  • Contribute to and assist with identifying, assessing, evaluating, and making testing referrals for any student-athlete presenting with symptoms of a learning challenge.
  • Disseminate psycho-educational report findings to the student-athlete and academic staff as needed following departmental protocol.
  • Make referrals to necessary service providers such as mental health and nutrition.
  • Serve as a liaison and develop positive relationships with University faculty and staff, including the office of Disability Services, to contribute to the maintenance of strong working relationships and collaborative efforts.
  • Assist student-athletes in obtaining accommodations through the office of Disability Services.


Documentation And Communication


  • Complete documentation of individual sessions and progress of assigned student-athletes in their Individual Academic Plans.
  • Provide clear, consistent communication on a frequent basis with academic staff.


Participate in representational activities that are required of the Herbst Academic Center:


  • Engage in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes as part of the recruiting process.
  • Serve on Herbst Academic Center committees as appropriate.


Other Related Duties


  • Perform all work responsibilities and maintain confidentiality in all applicable policies, rules, regulations and laws regarding NCAA, Pac-12, Athletics Department, University policies and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

What We Require


  • One year experience teaching or providing academic support services for students with learning deficiencies or disabilities. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or comparable field.


What You Will Need


  • Demonstrate a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of regulations and laws associated with ADA and accommodations for the learning challenged.
  • Knowledge of formal and informal diagnostic and assessment instruments and techniques for academic and career testing.


What We Would Like You To Have


  • Master's Degree in special education or comparable field.
  • Experience working with student-athletes in an academic support services setting.
  • Experience in providing advising or counseling services and programs for students in areas of study skills, academic survival skills, time-management skills, and literacy remediation.
