Education and Experience : A Bachelor or higher of Science in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field and four (4) years of professional laboratory experience in high complexity testing within the specialty of microbiology.
Licenses and Certificates : Registration as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency. Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
General Purpose
Under general supervision, perform high complexity testing and interpretation of a variety of laboratory tests and provide training and technical oversight of laboratory operations.
Typical Duties
Analyze and interpret the results of a variety of moderate-to-high complexity, waived, non-waived, and point-of-care testing procedures in the areas of chemistry, diagnostic immunology, hematology, microbiology, mycology, and urinalysis. Involves: Communicate test results to medical providers. Prepare media, reagents and chemical solutions in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), and calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment on a regular basis. Perform quality control (QC) on test kits and reagents, and order and maintain laboratory supplies. Maintain and monitor test logs, and participate in proficiency testing.
Identify training needs of laboratory and other testing personnel, provide regular technical training, and evaluate the competency of laboratory and other testing personnel on a continual basis. Quality Control and Assurance : Involves: Lead the development, initiation and monitoring of quality assurance and quality control programs. Establish criteria for acceptable performance of testing methods through all phases of testing. Verify and/or validate new testing methods, and implement corrective actions when performance specifications are not met. Evaluate proficiency testing results and perform root cause analysis for failures. Develop, review, and revise standard operating procedures on a regular basis. Performance Improvement : Involves: Lead the development and maintenance of performance improvement programs. Develop and meet laboratory goals. Lead in obtaining/maintaining accreditation by the College of American Pathologists.
Supervise assigned staff. Involves: Schedule, assign, instruct, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance. Provide for training and development. Enforce personnel rules and regulations, and work behavior standards firmly and impartially. Counsel, motivate and maintain harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, merit pay or other employee status changes.
