Under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor, lead grounds maintenance crew of assigned areas, including public access areas, lawns, gardens, play/athletic fields, and other assigned grounds. Perform a variety of grounds and landscape maintenance related work as directed and exercise independent judgment in the selection of work methods and procedures used in general grounds maintenance projects; perform pest control duties such as the application, inventory, safety and maintenance of compliance records of the Districts’ Integrated Pest Management Program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The following list of duties describes the various types of work that may be performed and the level of technical complexity of the assignment(s), and is not intended to be an all-inclusive list.
- Fill, level, roll, smooth and prepare ground for planting
- Lead a grounds maintenance crew and provide training, guidance, and work direction to groundskeepers, in addition to performing a variety of grounds and landscape maintenance work
- Ensure safety by removing or reporting hazards; especially pertaining to landscape
- Operate edgers, power clippers, small mowers, sprayers, tractors, trucks, chain saws, power edgers, power trimmers and other grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools
- Rake leaves and pick up paper and rubbish
- Clean gutters and drains
- Plant, transplant and remove plants and shrubs; assist in ongoing tree work that includes tree trimming, tree removal and stump grinding
- Assist in the installation, repair and programming of irrigation systems
- Operate manual and automatic irrigation systems
- Lead employees engaged in cultivating, watering, mowing and trimming lawns, shrubs, hedges, trees and flowers
- Review work orders, keep records and submit reports as required
- Operate, service and maintain a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, tools and machinery including mower, backhoe, sprayer, trencher, power sprayer, edger, saws, power sweepers, and lawn mowers
- Use hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth and debris from grounds and landscaped areas
- Perform and assist in playground and playing field work which includes, but is not limited to, fencing, play equipment and sandboxes
- Perform and oversee the spraying of insecticides, herbicides and other types of sprays on athletic fields, fences, trees, hedges, garden areas and other interior locations as directed
- Install landscapes in accordance with plans and instructions
- Haul dirt, trash and other materials
- Sweep, vacuum and blow walks, driveways, parking lots and other areas

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills
- Methods, materials and tools used in groundskeeping work
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures
- Basic principles of leadership, training, and providing direction to others
- Good work habits
- Basic tools, materials, equipment and practices of routine groundskeeping work
- Operation, use and maintenance of power grounds equipment
ABILITY TO:
- Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others
- Perform general grounds maintenance and routine gardening work
- Perform heavy manual labor
- Use hand and power tools of gardening and groundskeeping work safely
- Use chemicals and fertilizers properly
- Operate vehicles and trailers observing legal and defensive driving practices
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Operate grounds equipment
- Calculate amount of product or supplies needed
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of successful work experience performing a wide variety of school and recreational groundskeeping and gardening work involving some lead supervision. At least one (1) year of this experience should include the application of pesticides.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Incumbent will be involved in field work which requires travel in personal or District vehicles to various sites
- Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License
- Possession of a Qualified Applicator’s License or Certificate from the Department of Pesticide Regulation or procurement within 6 months from the date of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- See to drive and operate equipment; have depth perception

- Lift and carry or push objects which may exceed 100 pounds
- Reach horizontally and vertically with arm
- Use hands to operate hand and power tools requiring strength and coordination.
- Use hands and fingers to manipulate small objects and print or write legibly
- Speak in a normal voice to be able to be heard and understood at the work site
- Use lower body mobility to stand, walk, stoop, bend, crawl and extend legs
HAZARDS:
- Working around and with machinery having moving parts
- Fumes from vehicle and equipment operation
- Exposure to harsh substances

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Incumbents in this classification must possess required certification(s) within specialized field.
Positions in this job classification typically work 40 hours/week for 12 months/year.
The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Hayward Unified School District does not pay for employee health and welfare benefits.
Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. Health benefit costs are 100% employee paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Employees may opt out of health coverage upon presentation of proof of alternate coverage.
Dental coverage is mandatory for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more, regardless of outside coverage. Less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The District contributes the full premium for "employee only". Any additional premium will be employee paid.
