Job Summary

This is the specialist level of the GIS Technologist classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work, and provide leadership to others in GIS areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for unreviewed work. Incumbents function in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently. Progression to this level is typically restricted on the basis of business need. Lead GIS Technologists will have broader knowledge of data/information flows between systems, provide technical GIS experience when collaborating with multi-functional groups, have increased responsibility to provide training and guidance to less experienced teammates. This role assists GIS Tech with resolving jobs and coordinates with other departments while service as a Subject Matter Expert to improve processes and ensure alignment.
Responsibilities
With Minimal Supervision and ability to work independently:
  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance. Performs work of a higher classification when preparing for advancement. Guides and assists employees with their work, standard practices, and work procedures as assigned.
  • Develops training needs, training material and leads training.
  • Understanding of key business activities that use GIS Data
  • Coaches and mentors other GIS employees and provides input regarding employee performance to supervisor.
  • Understands, and interprets complex design drawings, property plats, maps, and other related information as necessary to post data in the Company GIS system. Generates and maintains GIS-generated maps. Perform Quality Control of team members standard and advanced work. Helps to develop training needs, training material and conduct training.
  • Analyze QA/QM findings in order to identify trends and make recommendations for improvements to business rules.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Provides subject matter technical expertise and understanding of the utility (distribution, transmission, natural gas) systems, connectivity, as well as the ability to identify abnormal and/or incorrect configurations or system inputs. Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Identify process gaps and make recommendations for improvement and assist with implementation.
Required Qualifications
  • In lieu of required degree, High School/GED and 10 years relevant work experience
  • Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geographic Information Science, Geography, Geology or other related degree
  • In addition to required education, minimum eight (8) years relevant work experience
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Smallworld or ESRI GIS platforms.
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geographic Information Science, Geography, Geology or other related degree
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Solid understanding the electric utility distribution network and modeling requirements of the Duke enterprise GIS.
  • Certified GIS Professional
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
