Role Summary:



The Lead Field Service Technician – Special Projects Support will provide hands-on technical and operations support of Reciprocating Compression equipment and supporting utility systems within customer facilities related to mechanical upgrades for emissions reduction. Commissioning, start-up, operations, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, performance testing, and trouble-shooting situations as required.



This position requires strong mechanical experience and familiarity with emissions reduction and electrical and controls support. Focus on emissions reduction will deliver a capable well-trained and experienced team.



The lead role candidate must have the abilities to manage a small crew to remove and replace end devices, turbochargers, power heads, and fuel valves. Electrical and Controls experience is a plus as this will expedite the controls specialist with a well-prepared unit for conduit and wiring upgrades.


This position will require extensive travel and OT.


  • Work extended hours up to 10-14 hours per day including weekends/holidays, 6 – 7 days per week. A typical work week can be 60-84 hours.
  • Travel 200-300 days per year anywhere from 2-10 weeks at a time.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



Lead the Field Service Technician – Special Projects site Team in the provision of technical and mechanical services to external customers in settings such as compressor stations, process plants, etc. The incumbent is also responsible for the following:


  • Through accepted standard troubleshooting processes, diagnose and correct engine problems and / or compressor problems.
  • Complete daily safety checks and report safety concerns.
  • Planning and execution of site installation activities for Reciprocating Compression equipment associated with emissions reduction modifications.
  • Investigate and resolve customer reports of technical problems with equipment.
  • On-site, attend operations meetings with client personnel to proactively identify issues and lead the efforts to resolve them.
  • Support turn-around activities for customers including identification / justification, procedure writing, reviews, equipment inspection, etc.
  • Learn, share, and implement best practices with extended Reciprocating Compression Engineering, Sales, and Operations team members.
  • Perform testing of equipment in the field.
  • Monitor key and critical operating variables and other process data to ensure that the engine and compressor units are operating within design parameters.
  • Participate in construction activities to ensure process designs are used for operational and safety, identifying improvements in unit operations based on actual field experience.
  • Perform minor repairs, major repairs or corrective maintenance on customer equipment including reciprocating engines and compressors.
  • Establish working relationships with key customer contacts including operators, engineering, and maintenance personnel to proactively cultivate the customer relationship and manage long term and short-term issues.
  • Eliminate future operational or service difficulties by performing preventative maintenance as requested by the customer.


Required Qualifications:


  • Expanded Product Knowledge
  • Basic Computer skills – Word & Excel
  • Electrical and Controls experience is a plus.
  • Education - Complete training for the following:
  • Engine Balancing
  • Associates Degree with a technical concentration or equivalent work experience
  • Basic leadership skills
  • Mature, with the ability to take direction and thick on the fly based on the type of work and needs of the customer / business.
  • Well-developed administrative and organizational skills,
  • Service bulletins
  • Basic Engine & Compressor Theory
  • Cooper Bessemer, Ajax, Superior Engine, Superior Compressor, Gemini Compressor, Clark, Waukesha, Dresser, Caterpillar
  • Master the Core competencies.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Reciprocating Compression
  • Safety focused, Service-oriented, Business focused, A self-starter.
  • Formal training in a technical certificate program
  • Results oriented with a sense of urgency.
  • Technical training in the oil and gas industry or associated industry
  • Must have the following attributes:
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and above average interpersonal skills are required.
  • Equipment Documentation e.g., drawings…etc.
  • Web Deflection/Alignment
  • Dependable with ability to multi-task successfully
  • Basic Shop Math Skills
  • Basic tools
  • Clear, concise, and accurate service reporting is required.
  • Meets all sublevel (FTGNR I) requirements.
