Job Description

Job Summary:


Operates technical equipment, answers 911 calls, and coordinates police response in a 24-hour communication center to ensure safety and security on all institutional properties. Assists in maintaining and updating departmental records; and serves as the primary point of contact for citizens experiencing a wide range of issues from non-emergency to emergencies and assists them to the needed resources or information both inside and outside the institution.

Responsibilities:

Operates technical equipment and coordinates police response in a 24-hour communication center to ensure safety and security on all institutional properties. Assists in maintaining and updating departmental records; and serves as the primary point of contact for citizens experiencing a wide range of issues from non-emergency to emergencies and assists them to the needed resources or information both inside and outside the institution.
  • 50% Operates police radios, phone consoles, and various equipment and technologies to receive and processes requests and information from institutional affiliates, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies
  • 5% Documents incidents accurately and adheres to all applicable policies, rules, and regulations
  • 10% Communicates effectively and provides accurate and detailed instructions to all types of audiences in high stress emergency situations
  • 15% Schedules logistics and secures resources for response to emergency incidents for the institution
  • 10% Troubleshoots, triages, and escalates issues according to established policies and procedures
  • 10% Required to work special events and assignments as identified by the Division.

Qualifications:


No communication dispatch experience is required, but previous experience or equivalent is helpful. All other employment experience will be considered.
Applicants should have or the ability to learn effective communication skills, multi-tasking proficiencies, and ability to make quick decisions in a fast-paced environment.
An extensive background investigation with be conducted on all finalist(s). This background may include a drug screen, reference checks, home visit, criminal history review, medical physical and psychological examination prior to beginning employment.


Work Schedule:


This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. Schedules rotate based on a pre-determined first shift, second shift, or third shift schedule and includes working holidays and weekends. Work beyond or outside hours scheduled may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.

Additional Information:


The UW-Madison Police Department is pleased to offer a $2,000 hiring bonus for new full-time employees! The bonus is available to candidates hired in to police officer, security officer, and dispatcher positions. The $2,000 bonus will be paid in three phases over the course of the new hire's first year of employment.
