Department or School Site The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Facilities Services Division is
responsible for the execution of the District’s school construction bond
programs, the maintenance and operations of schools, the utilization of
existing assets, and master planning for future capital projects. The Land
Surveying Aide will be assigned to the Architectural & Engineering
Services Unit (A/E Service) within the Maintenance & Operations
Branch. The Architectural & Engineering Services (A/E Service) within
the Maintenance & Operations Branch has responsibility for all design
activities associated with repair, modernization, and new construction
projects executed by the Facilities Services Division of the Los Angeles

Job Duties/Responsibilities The Land Surveying Aide acts as a rod and chain worker and performs
other routine nontechnical work in a surveying party making land,
topographic, and construction surveys.
Typical duties include:
- Performing routine manual tasks, such as holding a leveling rod;
measuring with a tape; and setting, driving, and marking grade and line
stakes.
- Records measurement data and makes arithmetic computations.
- Clears brush from lines of survey.
- Assists in establishing and setting property monuments.
- Assists in the care and maintenance of surveying instruments and other
equipment.
- May make simple drawings or tracings of school sites, ground
improvements, or related materials.
- Operates surveying instruments for training or relief purposes.
- May assist in preliminary work such as assembling, reviewing, and
plotting data.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements All employees must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated and must be able to
provide verification of their vaccination status as part of the hiring and
onboarding process prior to an official offer of employment to any District
site; this includes current employees who are being promoted to a new
job class.
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational
proficiency.
AND
One year of experience in field surveying or closely related civil
engineering work.
OR
Twelve semester units or the equivalent number of quarter units of
college level courses in civil engineering from a recognized college or
university may be substituted for the required experience.
Special:
A valid California Driver License. Use of an automobile.
Special Physical Requirements:
Stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time
Agility to climb ladders, walk on construction planks, and move safely in
construction sites
Strength to carry surveying equipment
Visual acuity to see flags and markers and to read plans and maps
Desirable Qualifications We are seeking team-oriented candidates who have a strong drive to
build their land surveying skills by assisting in routine nontechnical work
of a survey party and operates surveying instruments for training or relief
purposes. The candidate must be coachable and maintain an open
perspective when receiving direction. A high regard for detail is needed
when assembling, recording, and viewing data and making arithmetic
computations. Additionally, the candidate must be willing to work outside
in a variety of climates. The safety of our employees is prioritized;
therefore, an ideal candidate will be diligent and adhere to all safety
practices when clearing brush and operating survey equipment.
Furthermore, the ideal candidate will possess the ability to effectively and
professionally work with district personnel and contractors in a team
setting, handle conflict with professionalism, work independently, and be
flexible under necessary circumstances.
Additional knowledge and abilities of an ideal candidate include:
Knowledge of:
Surveying instruments and processes
High school mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
Surveying nomenclature and conventional symbols
Electronic total station and data collection software
CAD systems such as AutoDesk and Carlson
Ability to:
Make accurate field measurements with tapes and rods
Make accurate arithmetic calculations
Read civil engineering drawings
Make elementary civil engineering sketches
