Mom/Baby Unit
Mom & Baby is a 28-bed unit within Women and Children’s Health, caring for post-partum patients after delivery, as well as their newborns. There are typically 300 deliveries per month. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6, and a CNA in the nursery. Mom/baby nurses also act as “admit” RNs for all infants transferred to the Mom & Baby unit. Nurses take care of many babies whose status does not require NICU care, but who are not yet ready to go home. Mom/Baby nurses may periodically care for a number of GYN patients.
Job Summary

Under general supervision, the professional nurse adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics to provide care to all healthcare consumers. Applies critical thinking, evidence-based practices and competence to collaborate with the health care team to promote excellence in healthcare consumer safety and quality outcomes. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice.

Essential Functions:
  • Responsible for inpatient consultation, educational classes, educating antepartum, postpartum and high risk patient population about benefits of breastfeeding, follow up phone calls and occasional outpatient consults. (10%)
  • Some weekend and Holiday coverage will be required. (20%)
  • Understanding policy and procedure related to basic newborn care, donor milk, and feeding routines. (20%)
  • Providing support to provider/RN peers. (10%)
  • Lactation consults for term and preterm newborns. (20%)
  • This is a lactation position; this role will not be expected to perform bedside nursing care. (20%)

Education:
  • Associate's Degree Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years CLC experience preferred (this can occur coupled with RN experience).
  • 1-3 years bedside RN experience Required and

Licenses:
  • RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Refer to ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.
  • Effective communication with peers and families is essential, as is the ability to function well in a teamwork environment.
