Position Summary
Location: Manhattanville
Schedule: Tuesday- Saturday 2:00PM- 10:30PM
A Laborer is a position in the facilities department providing high quality and effective work to the academic, research, Labs, and administrative units on the Columbia University- Manhattanville Campus (CUMVC). The Laborer will ensure that the intended assignment to the client is consistently and appropriately performed. May be required to respond to any emergency on a 24-hour basis. Perform and/or assist in any emergent function of the Laborer.
Responsibilities
- Place stanchions / barricades as needed for special events
- Moves furniture, equipment and material for special events.
- Attend and participate in all departmental training and meetings
- During downtime assist other Departments i.e. Custodial and Grounds to include trash removal, replenishment of supplies, organizing store room spaces
- Responsible for maintaining storeroom in an organized manner.
- Must perform any relevant duties assigned in an emergency as determined by Head Laborer and/or Management
- Drives Columbia University Vehicles
- Report building malfunctions as instructed, i.e. power failures, leaks, building equipment and any other damages
- Dispose of materials and debris in Compactor Area.
- Attend and complete relevant on – the - job training as required
- Clean-up and remove construction debris.
- Appropriately remove and dispose of unwanted materials.
- Set-up and breakdown of events
- Remove and return stanchions / barricades to storage area.
- Moves furniture, equipment and material for special events.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work herein as assigned.
- Deliver and remove materials to job site.

Minimum Qualifications
- Communication etiquette including phone, radio, and customer service
- Must demonstrate knowledge of CUMVC’s safety policies and procedures (verbal and/or written) CUMVC’s customer service policies, as well as thorough knowledge of the facility and its operations(practical and/or written)
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- How to read SDS information, operating and maintenance procedures, procedure manuals
- Must be able to work all shifts as assigned
- Must be a quick learner and exhibit self-motivational skills.
- Well refined interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, customers, clients, students, vendors, and management.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as work orders, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Knowledge of and/or Training on the following:
- Use of portable fire extinguisher.
- Hazardous waste awareness.
- Personal Protective Equipment awareness
- Safe Equipment Handling
- Infection Control procedures
- Communication etiquette including phone, radio, and customer service
- Must demonstrate minimum professional proficiency in the English Language
- Hazardous waste awareness.
- Infection Control procedures
- Understanding of general research and laboratory rules and restrictions.
- How to properly and safely operate all equipment utilized by Labor Shop Department
- Must be a team player with an ability to work with others.
- HS diploma or GED is required, custodial experience preferred
- Safe Equipment Handling
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal requirements
- Use of portable fire extinguisher.
- Personal Protective Equipment awareness
Physical Requirements & Environmental Conditions

- Exposure to variable and unfavorable climate and weather conditions.
- Ability to work while wearing a respirator appropriate with regulations
- Sit, stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and squat for prolonged periods of time and/or repeatedly over a required period of time.
- Use strength to lift and transport items needed to perform the functions of the job, with the ability to lift 50 pounds independently and support team lift with reasonable accommodations.
- May work in an environment where a variety of pathogens, chemical substances, and gases are used for research. After receiving notification from EH&S that the area has clearance for work to be performed, employee(s) will be required to practice the use of proper PPE when exposed to the conditions mentioned, the use of N-95 respirator
- Reach with and work with hands and arms overhead
