Job Description
The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children and families by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, and early care services. In child welfare, ACS contracts with private nonprofit organizations to support and stabilize families at risk of a crisis through preventive services and provides foster care services for children not able to safely remain at home. Each year, the agency’s Division of Child Protection responds to more than 50,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. In juvenile justice, ACS manages and funds services including detention and placement, intensive community-based alternatives for youth, and support services for families. ACS is also a key part of NYCs early childhood and education continuum, providing childcare assistance to thousands of child welfare involved and low-income children so they can access safe, affordable, quality care.
The Administration for Children's Services (ACS) seeks qualified applicant for the position of City Laborer to play a critical role in the Office of Real Estate, Design + Construction Facilities Management. Currently the Office of Real Estate, Design + Construction Facilities Management is within the Division of Administration and manages building repairs, maintenance and capital upgrades for a variety of programmatic facilities within ACS purview, including various Field/Administrative Offices, Youth Detention centers. This role will focus on primarily on management of facility repairs, maintenance and medium to large scale projects at Field/Administrative Offices, Youth Detention centers across the five boroughs. Due to the population of children and families served, Health and Safety consideration are always paramount in the work we do. Under immediate supervision, Laborer positions will perform common unskilled laboring work requiring physical strength, moves, lifts and carries items of various weighs and sizes. May be required to operate motor vehicles in connection with the performance of duties.
The responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • May perform demolition work
  • Ensure all projects are conducted and completed in compliance with the NYC Building Code, Energy Code and all regulations in accordance with the Department of Environmental Protection and the New York Fire Department (FDNY)
  • Operate manual and/or power-driven equipment
  • Keep work records as required
  • May make use of hand or power-driven equipment in the performance of these duties
  • Move, lift and carry heavy objects and materials

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position.
2. There are certain medical and physical requirements.
License Requirements
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.

  • Ability to excel and prioritize workload/responsibilities within a results-oriented, fast paced work culture
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to tailor correspondence and communications to audiences with varied technical knowledges/background Comfort with a fast-paced, busy environment where workload, priorities and directives change shift on a regular basis
  • Experience with and sensitivity towards regulations, requirements and nuances associated with working at facilities where children are present
  • Knowledge or experience working with web-based facility management and/or Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • May operate motor vehicle as required in the performance of assigned duties
