Our researchers pursue this goal through an integrative approach that cuts across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. They combine molecular, electrophysiological, neurochemical, anatomical, imaging, behavioral, and neuropsychological methods to analyze how the brain works, develops, interacts with the environment, and is modified by experience in health and disease. CMBN is also committed to serving the academic and surrounding Newark communities through educational outreach, community service, and research internship programs that train undergraduate and high school students.


Posting Summary


Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Laboratory/Technical Assistant. This position will carry out complex research protocols and techniques in the Holly Lab in the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience.


This position will be responsible for and not limited to the following:


  • Maintains proficiency in all policies, practices, and regulations, and performs all work in compliance with laboratory practices and in accordance with all applicable policies and regulations, including, but not limited to, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Lab Animal Care ( AALAC ), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare ( OLAW ), and Rutgers Environmental Health and Safey ( REHS )
  • Runs own experiments under the direction of Dr. Holly, the Laboratory/Technical Assistant will also be expected to assist other lab members in their projects as needed and manage the animal colony
  • Ensures that the laboratory and equipment are maintained in a clean, safe matter in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Rodent operant behavioral experiments, immunohistochemistry and histological analysis of brain tissue, extraction of DNA from rodents, and PCR /electrophoresis to determine genotype
  • Overall laboratory maintenance and management, including maintaining equipment, ordering supplies, and cleaning and organizing the lab

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience


  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests, or other technical work may be substituted for the degree.


Certifications/Licenses


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, or related scientific discipline. Prior laboratory experience.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests, or other technical work may be substituted for the degree.
  • Must be able to work with live animals and be organized, responsible, detail oriented, and able to work individually and as a team.

  • Knows or will learn any and all equipment, software, and specialized materials needed to support the effective and efficient performance of this position.


Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Laboratory environment. Must be able to comfortably lift and move 30 pounds. This position involves prolonged standing, walking, and sitting, as well as use of laboratory equipment and related materials. Must demonstrate manual dexterity. Some stooping, reaching, climbing, and bending required. Work week may include infrequent evening and/or weekend work.
