Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for the School of Engineering. The Graduate Student Intern to join an exciting project funded by the SERVIR program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA ) of the United States of America during the Summer of 2023. The main goal of the project is to develop a flash flood forecasting system based on satellite observations and short-term forecasts of precipitation for the West Africa region (https://www.servirglobal.net/).
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Interacts with other members of the team working on different components of the forecasting system (nowcasting and warning components).
  • Responsible for the testing and validation of the simulation capabilities of the Ensemble Framework For Flash Flood Forecasting (EF5; http://ef5.ou.edu) hydrologic modeling tool over the domain in West Africa.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests, or other technical work may be substituted for the degree.
Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with distributed hydrologic models
  • Experience with Geospatial Information Systems ( GIS ) software ( QGIS or ArcMap)
  • Knowledge of hydrologic principle
  • Experience with scientific programming using a high-level language (Python and/or MATLAB )
