Job Summary


The University of Connecticut’s Department of Physiology and Neurobiology (PNB) is seeking an enthusiastic, flexible, full-time Laboratory Technician 2 for large Physiology and Anatomy teaching laboratories. Under the general supervision of the Lab Supervisor, the candidate will provide technical support and related assistance for the PNB Department, including the preparation and setup of laboratory exercises in the teaching laboratories. The candidate will support teaching activities of faculty and teaching assistants in the Physiology and Anatomy courses for the Physiology and Neurobiology Department.


Duties And Responsibilities


  • Works with live animals and performs humane euthanasia, dissects tissues, and processes animal blood.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and other lab materials.
  • Cleans, organizes, sets up, and breaks down weekly laboratories.
  • Participates in lab meetings and teaching assistant training.
  • Assists teaching assistants and students with technical problems related to laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Supports instructional teams in offering and revamping laboratory courses.
  • Works with and troubleshoots data acquisition equipment and other electronic and mechanical apparatus and associated computer programs.
  • Prepares, operates, tests, and evaluates laboratory equipment and resolves problems.
  • Evening hours are required.
  • Works independently, while seeking guidance when needed.
  • Reports problems with experimental methods and techniques.
  • Suggests edits to lab manuals and other written material and keeps current with new procedures.
  • Adheres to safety and standard operating procedures regarding chemical and biological safety and animal care in accordance with training.
  • Maintains necessary records and inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Works with preserved animals and tissues including dissections.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Experience working with animals.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science with a strong background in physiology and anatomy or a related area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles and general laboratory techniques.
  • Three years of related experience.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in all aspects of the job, including working evening hours.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to use common laboratory equipment and associated computer programs.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to work in a team setting and maintain good working relationships with a variety of people including graduate and undergraduate students, office staff, faculty, and animal care staff.
  • Experience in a teaching laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Experience operating specialized electronic and mechanical laboratory equipment and fluency in associated computer programs.
  • Excellent organizational skills including initiative and attention to detail.
  • Experience with animal euthanasia, animal blood and other aspects of laboratory animal use.
