Job Summary
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the management of the daily activities of the laboratory, supervises one of the departmental disciplines and performs the duties of a Medical Technologist.
Essential Functions
- Manages the strategic planning process for the lab and participates in overall strategic planning for UHS. Develops goals and objectives for the lab, including evaluation and procurement of new test platforms.
- Understands and contributes to implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a multicultural environment.
- Proposes and manages laboratory operating budget. Originates purchase requests for supplies and equipment. Interviews sales representatives and communicates with vendors. Supervises the evaluation of products and makes recommendations for purchase.
- Participates in regularly scheduled laboratory meetings and participates in continuing education.
- Assumes responsibility for the daily operation of the laboratory, supervises one of the laboratory sections including the collection of potentially hazardous biological specimens, performs simple and complex analysis often using hazardous chemicals, uses universal precautions when exposed to blood and body fluids, participates in internal as well as external quality control programs and checks all tests for precision and accuracy. Provides consultation and advice to Amherst and Hampshire College Health Services staff.
- Develops policies and procedures for laboratory and UHS laboratory related tasks, including initiating new policies to ensure reliability, quality management, staff safety, and cost savings within the lab. Evaluates cost effectiveness of testing strategies and test platforms.
- Participates in establishment of laboratory goals and objectives and evaluates performance related to same.
- Interviews, selects, and trains laboratory staff, evaluates work performance, and makes recommendations for personnel action, develops new procedures, and trains all staff regarding those changes.
- Maintains equipment, adequate supply inventory and documentation related to these functions and those related to accreditation and CLIA requirements and prepares various laboratory reports.
Other Functions
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
- Five years of experience in clinical laboratory including two years in supervisory capacity.
- Ability to evaluate products and techniques.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory statistics and computers.
- Bachelor of Science degree and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) registered or eligible (or equivalent).
- Familiarity with basic budget concepts.
Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm; On-call responsibility may require evening, weekend & holiday time.
