Job Description

Summary

This is a supervisory position responsible for assignment coordination, oversight, and inspection of traffic control work as related to the installation, routine maintenance, and repair of construction and detector loops. Work involves leading a crew including continuous on-site supervision, with regular review and feedback to support accurate work and efficient performance. Work involves assignments received from the Field Engineering & Operations Supervisor with ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative within established practices and procedures.

Specific work task oversight includes but is not limited to installation, routine maintenance, and repair of ground construction for traffic signals, underground pipe, concrete bases for controller boxes, pedestrian signal bases, underground pull boxes, loop detectors.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise, lead, and assist crew work during installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control systems including construction, and loops.
  • Ensure all crew tasks are completed correctly; take initiative and corrective action to resolve when work is not completed to standards.
  • Maintain accurate work records including daily work logs, maintenance, inventory forms, vehicle inspection forms, and other documentation as required.
  • Operate a variety of specialized equipment and tools used in traffic operations; (i.e., dump truck, crane, trencher/backhoe, pneumatic drills, pneumatic jackhammers, air compressor, core drill, loop saw, sawzall, concrete saw, specialized paint equipment, etc.)
  • Continuously evaluate, correct, and enhance crew performance through the Performance, Review and Development (PRD) system.
  • Provide direct leadership by coaching, counseling, and leading by example. Create the most effective and efficient work and team environment.
  • Coordinate and attend meetings including field meetings, safety tailgate meetings, preconstruction meetings, etc. as required.
  • Promote and maintain a safe work environment by following appropriate procedures, utilizing personal protective equipment and recognizing and reporting unsafe conditions and actions.
  • Ensure temporary traffic control, safety cones, and signs are utilized in accordance with the CDOT WATCH handbook, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) 811 locate procedure and specialized training.
  • Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment as required.
  • Interpret plans and work orders to determine and confirm proper placement of ground construction for traffic control devices.
  • Act as the first point of contact for all emergency calls and make informed decisions on to resolve issues and take appropriate action within established guidelines.
  • Use excellent customer service skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and all members of the general public.
  • Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to obtain and maintain City Driving Permit.
  • Ability to work as a team, and lead crews for various types of traffic operations projects.
  • Knowledge of the MUTCD
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved with working heavy equipment, underground utilities including electric, working in and around vehicle traffic.
  • Skilled in construction work involving the maintenance and installation of all ground construction for traffic signals, wires, control cables, and pedestrian signals.
  • Ability to read and interpret signal plans provided by traffic engineers.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, sometimes under unfavorable or extreme weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices for the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic control systems.
  • Ability to read and write, including signal plans.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems related to the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control devices with limited supervision from Field Operations Supervisor.
  • Ability to use specialized equipment (i.e., dump truck, cranes, trencher/backhoe, pneumatic drills, pneumatic jackhammers, air compressor, core drill, sawzalls, loop saw, concrete saw, etc.) and hand tools used in traffic operations.
  • Ability to utilize computer such as work order management system, emails, calendar, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties
  • High School Graduate or Equivalent and five (5) years relevant work experience
  • Class A CDL

Salary

  • $45,615.00 - $57,019.00 / Year; Commensurate with experience
