Description:

Exceptional opportunity for a Lab Professional with Transfusion/Immunohematology experience to support our vision and serve with us as a compassionate and transforming healing presence in our community. The Manager Lab Section - Transfusion Service is responsible for management of Trinity Health Ann Arbor Transfusion Service. This lab performs over 130,000 tests and transfuses 11,000-12,000 blood products per year. This is a state-of-the-art Transfusion Service that provides support for active cardiovascular surgery and orthopedic surgery programs as well as a level 1 trauma center, a cancer care center, a neonatal intensive care unit, and supports a large outreach program. There are currently approximately 13 FTEs who will report to this manager and a sizeable operating budget.

Responsible for the supervision of the Laboratory personnel engaged in the conducting of routine and/or specialized tests and analyses. Provides a general level of technical and managerial direction to (a) ensure the accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the assigned group, (b) resolve day-to-day problems within the laboratory, (c) and ensure or conduct the necessary on-the-job and formal training of subordinates and (d) manages the utilization of resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responsible for hiring, training, orientation, performance review and development of employees.

Facilitates compliance with all CAP, AABB, Joint Commission, FDA, NRC and patient and employee safety, integrity, and other regulatory requirements.

Oversees the development and maintenance of technical policies and procedures, in conjunction with pathologist section head.

Responsible for development of operating and capital budgets.

Establishes means to monitor and control costs and productivity, relative to operating budget, and benchmarks.

Collaborates with laboratory management, employees, pathologist section heads, and Health System personnel using effective communication and problem-solving skills.

Collaborates with the LIS department in the maintenance of all test information, and instrument interface requirements.

Responsible for all section quality management requirements including oversight of section quality control, proficiency testing, monitoring of appropriate quality indicators, and continuous quality improvement approach, in conjunction with pathologist section head of Transfusion Service.

Participates in and fosters a performance improvement approach that includes both intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities.

Supports regional development of the health system.

Stays abreast of technological advancements in areas of responsibility and implements new technology as needed.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or university in Medical Laboratory Science, equivalent workexperience, or related science required, depending on section(s) to which assigned.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) ASCP preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively more responsible experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. At least two years of leadership experience, in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact with a variety of laboratory personnel, patients and other medical professionals.
  • A high level of organization is expected along with attention to detail and follow-thru.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • The analytical and administrative skills necessary to plan, guide and control the day-to-day activities of one or more sections of the laboratory.
  • An in-depth understanding of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in assigned area of responsibility.
