Job Description
What to Expect
Tesla is looking for a motivated lab manager to provide support to the manufacture of powertrain products, Gigafactory Nevada. This role includes organization of routine work, training, facilities management, and providing technical guidance for quality testing in a multidiscipline lab team. This role works closely with Operations, Manufacturing and Quality Engineering teams to provide results that maintain product yield at the highest standards of safety and quality.
What You’ll Do
  • Author/update and train lab staff on lab standard operating procedures and test method documents following existing quality system practices
  • Manage daily test requests and sample workflow to ensure consistently high level of timely accurate measurement, evaluation, and analytical services
  • Lab facilities and environmental monitoring and control
  • Supervise the day-to-day work of laboratory technicians and ensure their testing is performed using established procedures through training and technical assistance
  • Calibration and maintenance of lab equipment
  • Maintenance of lab facilities for engineers to solve problems
  • Facilitate good laboratory practices for incoming quality and engineering in a 24x7 manufacturing environment including:
  • Monitor and report ongoing lab work status to lab management while driving lab operational improvements
  • Support a team of materials scientists, engineers, chemists, and technicians performing routine quality testing as well as high priority/rapid response projects
  • Follow safety protocols and ensure all team members working in and/or visiting the lab adhere to safety rules and good laboratory practices
  • Utilize JIRA to track testing, train employees, and maintain security and confidentiality
  • Support lab safety practices
  • Lab sample management, lab access training, and process development
What You’ll Bring
  • Previous operation and experience with any of these equipment/techniques is a plus: SEM/EDX, DSC, XRF, metallography, Instron mechanical test systems, GCMS, OES (Spark or ICP), IC, or FT-IR
  • Ability to manage lab-technicians with diversified seniority levels
  • Ability to work through ambiguity
  • Support a cross-functional technical team in a lab environment
  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in a physical science or engineering with experience. Chemistry or Materials Science preferred
  • Able to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • 24 h support of the factory is expected
