Job Description

The K-12 Fine Arts Specialist at the Utah State Board of Education plays a crucial role in supporting and advancing fine arts education across the state. This position is responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and support related to the fine arts to LEAs, schools, educators, educational leaders and other stakeholders.

Principal Duties
  • Coordinate scheduling and content of POPS Professional Outreach Program in the Schools (POPS) convenings
  • Oversee standards revision process for content areas in the fine arts
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Oversee the standards and endorsements for the Fine Arts including: Elementary Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts, and Arts Integration and Secondary Dance, Film and Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Art, and K-12 extension
  • Coordinate and align efforts with institutions of higher education around fine arts endorsements
  • Collaborate with Fine Arts team to review Sorenson Legacy Award applications and support components of this event
  • Regularly communicate with educators and stakeholders through email, phone, and through online forums
  • Review fine arts endorsement applications, accompanying documents and evidence of competency to determine fulfillment of requirements
  • Oversee the components of R277-444. Distribution of Money to Arts and Science Organizations for the included arts organizations
  • Collect and analyze data on fine arts education, including student achievement, participation rates, and program effectiveness, and use the findings to inform decision-making and policy development
  • Oversee fine arts microcredential approvals
  • Stay informed about local, state, and national policies and initiatives related to fine arts education
  • Vet fine arts resources that are distributed from USBE to the field according to the USBE’s resource vetting checklist
  • Oversee endorsement courses offered through USBE including vetting content, recruiting and completing service agreements with facilitators, and ensuring processes for offering and capturing credit are followed
  • Attend approved conferences to garner insights in the art forms, network with arts educators, and present relevant information
  • Set up and process grants to arts organizations included in R277-444
  • Compile and maintain fine arts course offerings available at institutions of higher education in Utah to support educators in locating acceptable courses to fulfill endorsement requirements
  • Provide professional learning and meaningful convenings for arts educators throughout the state
  • Collaborate across USBE departments and sections to ensure alignment of programs
  • Support the Utah State Board of Education Strategic Plan and goals and strategies therein
  • Collaborate with other content area specialist to enhance content integration
  • Prepare for, attend and present before and during the legislative session upon request from USBE leadership
  • Revise art form endorsement applications as needed with input from stakeholders in the field and institutions of higher education
  • Attend and present at USBE Board meetings
  • Collaborate with the Fine Arts team to coordinate schedules and content for convenings of fine arts stakeholders
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position is someone who has:
  • A school leadership license
  • Familiarity with current trends, research, and best practices in fine arts education
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national policies and regulations related to education and fine arts
  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience in fine arts, preferably at various grade levels
  • A master’s degree with a professional secondary license with artform specific endorsement and the Fine Arts K-12 extension endorsement
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
  • A deep understanding of the Utah Core Standards in Fine Arts
  • Skill in organization and project management
  • A collaborative team player
  • Experience with microcredentials
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis
  • Strong knowledge of fine arts disciplines, including visual arts, music, theater, dance, film and media arts and arts integration as well as their pedagogy
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Understanding of and experience with adult learning
  • An instructional coaching endorsement

  • Knowledge and experience with personalized competency based learning
