Description


The Juvenile Probation Officer performs professional correction work supervising juveniles placed on probation or in detention by the courts. Work involves assessing juvenile probationers, meeting with probationers to ensure adherence to terms of probation, and maintaining records of probationers' activities and status. The employee is also responsible for providing clients with limited counseling and referring clients to probation assistance programs, and conferring with law enforcement and court personnel in matters pertaining to violation of probation by clients. Work may also involve developing supervision and treatment plans for probationers, supervising juveniles in detention facilities to ensure their safety and welfare, and transporting juveniles between jails, medical institutions, schools, etc. Duties assigned to employees in the job title vary according to division assignments and/or allocation of workload. The employee is subject to the usual potential hazards of contact with legally delinquent juveniles.


Examples of Duties


Maintains individual case files, recording all contacts and preparing reports of clients' status.


Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information.


Testifies in court as to probationers' status and adherence to reporting schedules and other terms of probation, as appropriate.


Calls detainees' family members if necessary, and advises detainees of rules and regulations.


Observes detainees' demeanor to determine mental state and the possible need for treatment and/or closer observation.


Regular and punctual attendance is required.


Documents all contacts with juveniles and others involved in their case, along with all activities involved.


Answers phone calls, check-ins, and e-mails; prepares correspondence as necessary.


Prepares Case Plans or Case Plan Reviews along with all information needed for the case.


Attends court as necessary; checks over all paperwork; enters all adjudication information into the computer.


Completes sex offender risk assessments for sex offenders that have hearings for Judges to assign risk levels.


Sends copy of sex offender registration and orders to stop registering to the proper law enforcement agency.


Minimum Qualifications


Performs other related duties as required.


A bachelor's degree AND one year of experience in a social service, community, corrections or juvenile agency that deals with offenders or disadvantaged persons. Internships may be counted toward meeting one year's experience based on actual hours completed when the duties performed were related to the field of juvenile justice; OR


A bachelor's degree AND one year of graduate study in criminology, corrections, counseling, law, social work, psychology, sociology, or other field of instruction approved by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.


Eligible for certification within six (6) months as a Juvenile Probation Officer by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.


Possession of a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas driver's license within 90 days.


Officer must meet the requirements in Title 37, Chapters 343 & 344 of the Texas Administrative Code including but not limited to being of good moral character and at least 21 years of age.


Must be able to pass a State Criminal History background check.


Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred, but not required.
