Norfolk Southern Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, seeks an energetic problem solver with proficiency in web application development, specifically with Cobol, .NET, relational databases, and object-oriented design principles. This applicant must be highly motivated to meet project deadlines and technology challenges. The qualified candidate will join a mission critical and dynamic development team working on Norfolk Southern’s customer portal.

As a part of our talented and innovative TYES Team, you will take part in the development of cutting-edge web applications solving challenging business needs. You will be building solutions from the ground up, starting with investigating design approaches, prototyping new solutions, and evaluating technical feasibility. You will be responsible for all aspects of development including design, development, testing, and maintenance of key systems. You will work in a dynamic environment to deliver a forward-looking user experience while maintaining high-quality software. Development responsibilities include overall application design and development of critical application components using Microfocus Cobol and Microsoft .NET.
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct system wide requirement analysis and work effort estimations.
  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders.
  • Take smart risks and champion new ideas.
  • Deliver innovative, engaging web and desktop applications using the latest software technologies.
  • Participate in peer-reviews and provide feedback.
  • Use best practices and coding standards.
  • Identify design problems and devise solid technical solutions.
  • Fulfill several project requests simultaneously while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide accurate and detailed weekly task reports.
  • Thoroughly understand the requirements and ability to develop detailed software designs.
  • Work with business partners and outside vendors to collect and confirm project business requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the PM / Architects / BAs.
  • Develop, maintain, troubleshoot, enhance, and document components develop by self and others as per the requirements and detailed design.
Skills:
Required:
  • Deep understanding of Microsoft .NET.
  • Working experience with agile methodologies (Scrum).
  • Working experience with UML and design patterns.
  • Strong analytical skills, detail oriented. Ability to troubleshoot issues and provide solutions
  • Experience with data modeling and database programming skills (IBM DB2).
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of networks, firewalls, load balancers and concepts with the ability to provide requirements to infrastructure team as well as provide troubleshooting assistance.
  • Shows initiative and goes above and beyond to assist others as needed.
  • Working knowledge with Tricentis – Tosca (test automation).
  • 6+ years of work experience with Cobol, Java, and .NET technologies.
  • Working experience with RedHat OpenShift environment.
  • Deep understanding of web services software architecture and design (REST/SOAP), including security-based implementations.
  • Proven ability to build, manage and foster a team-oriented environment.
  • Desire to work in an information systems environment.
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and front-end frameworks.
  • Strong knowledge of Microfocus Cobol, including data structures, algorithms, enterprise systems, and asynchronous architectures.
  • Working knowledge of continuous integration tools: Jenkins, Nexus, JUnit, Selenium, SonarQube, Maven, Gradle, Ant, SVN, GIT, Puppet, Chef.
  • Proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure systems (servers, systems administration, and unix/linux scripting skills) a plus.

Preferred:
  • Experience with data modeling and database programming skills (DB2 and SQL Server experience a plus).
  • Deep understanding of web services software architecture and design (REST/SOAP), including security based implementations.
  • Experience implementing transaction and management and persistence using SOE frameworks (such as Entity Framework).
  • Strong knowledge of WCF services, including data structures, algorithms, enterprise systems, and asynchronous architectures.
  • Experience with C# and Java technologies.
  • Working experience with MVC and design patterns.
Education:
4-yr College Degree required in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
