The Division of Global Engagement (DGE) at the University of California Santa Cruz advances the University's teaching, learning and research mission by working collaboratively throughout the institution to promote global engagement and advance campus internationalization by increasing international mobility among students and faculty, promoting faculty engagement in international activities and developing strategic partnerships abroad. DGE interacts with campus leadership on strategic planning and initiatives to elevate the reputation of UC Santa Cruz globally. DGE units include International Student Services and Programs (ISSP), International Faculty & Scholar Services, Global Learning, and Global Initiatives.

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of International Student Services and Programs, the International Programs Specialist assists in the development and implementation of a wide variety of custom programs that bring international students to the University and support their academic and intercultural learning. The incumbent also assists in the development and implementation of a broad range of programming for inbound international degree-seeking and exchange students and visiting international scholars, supporting community building and cultural adjustment to the University and the United States. The Specialist works with the Director to recommend improvements and changes to policies, practices, and procedures related to programming.
Under general supervision, the Specialist liaises with campus units and external vendors as needed to deliver programs and promote programs to various constituencies such as visiting short-term students, degree-seeking international students, international exchange students, international scholars, and study-abroad students. Oversees the logistics and operations of programs and works within budget guidelines to ensure successful execution. This position involves direct supervision of student workers in support of programs and activities.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $61,500 to $72,000/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
35% - Customized Short-Term Program Development and Implementation
  • Applying professional student services concepts, leads in the planning and development of special programs, such as short-term non-credit study programs for students from international partners, the Graduate Preparation Program, the International Summer Research Program, and other programs as needed. Collaborates with campus staff, academic departments, and instructors to promote and administer programs.

30% - Program/Workshop Development and Implementation
  • Develop various workshops in collaboration with GE staff or other campus units such as intercultural development workshops for students and staff, academic strategies for international students, tax workshops for international students, faculty workshops on supporting international students, and other cultural and academic programs. Serves as primary unit liaison with Global Learning to develop pre-departure orientation programs, annual study abroad fair, summer opportunities fair, career pathways for global learning returnees, and other programs to better prepare students for study and cultural adjustment to another country and to assist students with re-entry. The incumbent will collaborate closely with staff in Global Engagement to plan and/ or deliver these programs.
  • Plans, designs, and delivers a variety of programs and workshops to student and scholar populations served by Global Engagement. Assists in the development and implementation of a variety of new international student orientations for graduate and undergraduate students, as well as programs that support the ongoing cultural adjustment, connection, and well-being of international students and scholars. Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events such as International Education Week (IEW) and large-scale collaborations with campus partners.
  • Maintains relationships with campus partners and external vendors to arrange spaces, speakers, catering, and transportation as needed. Must have access to a car and be able to drive to purchase, pick up, deliver, and set up food and materials as needed.
  • Assists in tracking program expenses. Conducts assessments of programs for continuous review and improvement. Interprets and ensures adherence to UCSC, system-wide, and national policies and regulations as they relate to student programs.

15% - Mentorship and Supervision of Student Staff
  • Assists in managing the Global Mentorship Program, providing counseling, guidance, and development of student leaders, including mentor training and matching mentees. Assists in hiring and supervision of student staff.

15% - Outreach
  • Works closely with the Director of Communications and ISSP staff to implement outreach activities and promotional strategies to raise awareness of student and scholar programming and events throughout the year. Serves as manager of UCSC International Services and Programs social media on various platforms and manages ISSP newsletter.

5% - Collaboration
  • Represents international students and programs on various campus working groups and committees as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work without direct supervision.
  • Effective verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and successfully work with international students, scholars, and campus stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making and problem solving for unanticipated events.
  • Demonstrated multicultural/intercultural competencies; successful prior experience working with international populations.
  • Demonstrated experience with assessment of programs and implementation of improvements, including measures to improve processes and / or services to students and scholars.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks with highly-demanding workload and under pressure of deadlines.
  • Demonstrated effective written communication skills for a variety of audiences, including faculty, staff, and international students.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in event and/or program planning and promotion for international students, international scholars, and/or other constituencies.
  • Prior experience in project management and demonstrated success in collaboration with individuals and diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in higher education with a focus on international education.
  • Knowledge of common higher-ed practices in international student programming.
  • Knowledge of common computer application programs used in higher education settings.
  • Experience working with study abroad student populations.
  • Experience living and/or working abroad.
  • Master's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.

  • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
