Job Description
The Program Director (PD) of the Internal Medicine residency is responsible for the general administration and development of the residency program, including those activities related to the recruitment, selection, instruction, supervision, counseling, evaluation, and advancement of residents and the maintenance of records related to program accreditation. The PD must demonstrate a strong interest in the education of residents, sound clinical and teaching abilities, support of the goals and objectives of the program, a commitment to his/her own continuing medical education, and participation in scholarly activities. The PD must administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating residents in each of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competency areas. The PD will serve as the primary graduate medical education (GME) leader for Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in partnership with Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and accordingly will serve as the point of contact for other GME-related activities. The PD is also responsible for prudent management of the program’s financial resources. 50% percent (0.5 FTE) of his or her time dedicated to the residency program (exclusive of time spent in direct patient care without the presence of residents). Job Duties: Develop the program curriculum. Maintain current knowledge of national innovations in curriculum form and content. Regularly review and work collaboratively to update and improve each component of the curriculum. Provide leadership and direction to ensure compliance with institutional and program-specific requirements as defined by the ACGME and the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Evaluation Committee. Ensure that all trainees completing the program are prepared to successfully meet the initial certification requirements set out by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Report to executive management concerning program performance and results of accreditation-related activities. Review applications and participate in an extensive fashion in the interviewing and recruitment of residents to the program. Assure compliance with policies and procedures set forth by the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Critically review each resident’s performance scholastically, professionally, and humanistically on a regular basis and provide summative and formative evaluations. Review all attending physician evaluations of resident performance. Monitor and seek ways to improve the quality of care rendered by the residents. Recruit physicians for faculty positions within the GME program and/or health system as appropriate. Direct and monitor program faculty to ensure high-quality clinical instruction and supervision. Develop a program of faculty development and adjust over time as appropriate to support advanced of the clinical educator skills of the faculty members. Be knowledgeable of the details of the financing of GME and the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center Emergency Medicine residency. Determine fiscal requirements, make projections, and oversee preparation and management of the program budget within funding and program size constraints. Be knowledgeable of CMS rules applying to GME, seek appropriate administrative and legal counsel regarding complex rules, and assist the staff, residents, and the institutions in complying with such rules. Develop policies for the program and monitor overall compliance with these policies Implement a system of performance measures and performance monitoring for the program. Prepare and present periodic reports to the GME Committee (GMEC) regarding the program, including required ACGME reports, and other special reports as required. Serve as liaison with all administrators, faculty, affiliated institutions, accrediting bodies, and outside organizations to accomplish program directives and facilitate resolution of problems.
