Internal Medicine Residency Program Director

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Maine Medical Center is seeking an experienced clinician educator to serve as Residency Program Director.

Maine Medical Center (MMC) is the state’s largest medical center, licensed for 700 beds, and supports over 300 residents and fellows in 19 residency programs and 14 fellowship programs approved by the ACGME. MMC’s medical school affiliate is Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM), which includes the highly successful TUSM-MMC “Maine Track” medical school partnership. Educational and research affiliates include VA Maine Healthcare, the Maine Practice Network and the MaineHealth Institute for Research. MMC teaching faculty are developed and supported by the MMC Institute for Teaching Excellence. MMC is part of an integrated health care system, MaineHealth, which includes 9 hospitals, home health, Maine Behavioral Healthcare and NorDx Laboratories.

MMC’s Internal Medicine Residency is Maine’s only internal medicine residency program and has been training residents since 1956. The program currently supports 36 categorical internal medicine residents, 3 rural internal medicine residents, 3 internal medicine-geriatrics residents, 16 internal medicine-pediatrics residents, 14 preliminary interns (from anesthesia, neurology and radiology programs) and 2 chief residents.

Candidates must be board certified in Internal Medicine and eligible for the rank of associate professor. They must demonstrate ability as a dynamic leader, clinician, scientist and medical educator, with past experience as program director or associate program director. The Program Director must ensure that residents are properly supervised in carrying out their patient care responsibilities and develop and maintain an effective curriculum that complies with all elements of the Next Accreditation System including ACGME core competencies, milestones and Clinical Learning Environment Reviews.

The Residency Program Director will report to the Department Chair of Internal Medicine, and closely collaborate with the Designated Institutional Official (DIO), the Vice Chair for Education and Professional Development, three Associate Residency Program Directors, two Chief Residents and a Residency Program Coordinator.
