The Developer is part of the Learning Technologies and Infrastructure (LT&I) team that designs and implements application and data integration solutions that move data between UW and UW Medicine enterprise applications.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Intermediate to Advanced HR and Learning Systems Integration

  • Performs intermediate to advanced level programming in the development and implementation of interface systems with emphasis on minimizing support and maintenance requirements and identity management.
  • Perform intermediate to advanced level system development changes necessary to enhance and/or maintain applications, using standard client/server and/or web technologies and application API's.
  • Designs and implements appropriate fixes following established design/build standards and operational processes and procedures for the team. Solutions should be focused towards more standardized solutions (where possible) to minimize complexity and ease long-term support costs. Solutions should be reusable and configurable via parameters where possible, to decrease system maintenance.
  • Supports and maintains systems within the established service level agreement for applicable systems.
  • Monitors interfaces for optimal performance.
  • Analyzes intermediate to advanced level issues and takes appropriate corrective action if performance issues are identified.
  • Creates and maintains intermediate to advanced level scripts to automate required operational activities.
  • Works with users to understand any reported issues or concerns with existing production systems.
  • Conducts intermediate to advanced level analysis and design tasks for the development of interface systems.
  • Deploys solutions upon successful completion of testing. Implements interfaces in UW Medicine’s interface environment ensuring integrity of data.
  • Lead intermediate to advanced level functional and technical design, development, and testing of applications systems and data integrations, ETL processes and internal application interfaces.
  • Coordinate and follow required Change Control processes to ensure proper approval, coordination, and communication of systems changes.
  • Provide technical guidance, establishing oneself as an advisor to various cross-functional BI stakeholders.
  • Perform design and code reviews of developed solutions for quality assurance.
  • Follow ITS and LT&I Analytics report build standards and change control processes, with a focus on enterprise build and long-term system maintenance.
  • Design and develop metrics, reports and analyses of advanced to complex complexity to drive key business decisions.
  • Provide scheduled and ad hoc mentoring and professional development to team members.
  • Independently develop BI solutions in a proficient and timely manner, consistent with estimates created during design, with minimal technical assistance and support.
  • Independently test solutions developed prior to any external reviews or testing.
  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation (design documents, report inventory, promotion requests, etc.).
  • Lead interactions with customers to communicate status, resolve issues, and obtain signoffs (design complete, testing complete/ready for promotion).
  • Perform efficient, complete hand-offs to other developers when required.
  • Report project status and issues to the reporting team supervisor in a timely manner.
    Intermediate to Advanced Level Business Intelligence
  • Work with domain administrators, users and managers across UW Medicine to build an understanding of underlying reporting needs to analyze trends, develop dashboards and metrics, and manage operations.
  • Create intermediate to advanced level SSRS reports.
  • Produce and maintain intermediate to advanced level technical documentation and business requirements.
  • Collaborate with developers and business stakeholders on consistent definitions of data, segments, and attributes across channels.
  • Investigate, recommend, and source new, intermediate to advanced level potential data sources and/or tools to elevate opportunities for improvement.
  • Investigate technical, operational, and business impact of incorporating data sources and tools into existing infrastructure.
  • Work with end users, vendors and outsourced support teams on intermediate to advanced level requirements gathering, develop and test code, implement new processes in production, maintain and support.
  • Work with appropriate teams to provide needed data.
  • Performs intermediate to advanced level audits and reviews and validates databases to ensure data integrity.
  • Assist with ad hoc report generation and data analysis.
  • Proactively initiate & contribute to intermediate to advanced level system improvements and innovations.
  • Conduct unit testing, intermediate to advanced level troubleshooting, and resolve technical & performance issues in a production environment.
  • Shared responsibility in understanding and supporting reporting infrastructure and tools.
  • Work effectively with management and team members to clarify needs and priorities.
  • Research questions and issues involving Production BI solutions.
  • Work with data architects, SQL administrators, BI administrators, BI Developers, and others as needed to resolve to production issues.
  • Provide on-call production support for selected times (i.e., month end processing, year-end processing, system upgrades, etc.)
    Intermediate to Advanced Level Monitoring and Maintenance of Systems

  • Manage intermediate to advanced level customer problem and enhancement requests.
  • Coordinate and assist in intermediate to advanced level resolution of application and process problems.
  • Work closely with the ITS Help Desk to provide efficient and responsive support to end users.
  • Liaison with site functional analysts, business analysts, developers and end users.
  • Act as a liaison and/or facilitate communication between end users and IT Services system administrators, other analysts and programmers.
  • Work with user groups to provide intermediate to advanced level diagnostic assistance, resolution to questions and problem direction.
  • Work with vendors, IT Services staff and users to resolve intermediate to advanced level issues and confirm satisfactory resolutions.
    Intermediate to Advanced Level Development and Maintenance of Systems Documentation

  • Maintain accurate documentation of system changes and issues using standard methodologies.
  • Provide weekly status reports. Information should be accurate, timely, and pertinent.
  • Develop or modify intermediate to advanced level technical design specifications, data architecture diagrams and data-flow diagrams.
  • Maintain intermediate to advanced level test plans and scripts for system and unit testing.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness of the current and future BI technologies and best practices and fully understand the various organizational structures of UW Medicine and their unique requirements; utilize and assist leadership in communicating these best practices.
  • Coordinate with Business Analysts, Data Architects, Structured Quality Language (SQL) Administrators, BI Administrators and others to understand and document technical requirements, capabilities, and limitations.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts, Data Architects, SQL Administrators, BI Administrators and others to design appropriate BI solutions based on business and technical requirements.
  • Perform project planning related to BI solutions development tasks, including effort and completion date estimates.
  • Perform and complete all tasks in the agreed upon timelines.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks with minimal assistance.
  • Document incidents, problems, and system changes in accordance within organizational change control procedures.
  • Obtain and transfers knowledge appropriately when new software or hardware are implemented.
    Project and Process Management

  • Prioritize tasks with guidance from designated lead, supervisor, or project manager.
  • Track and provide regular project status updates to leaders, customers, and stakeholders on progress and obstacles.
  • Guide small projects or larger project sub-components that may include cross-functional teams.
  • Follow required Change Control processes to ensure proper creation, approval, coordination, and communication of project tasks.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple tasks at once, adjusting for roadblocks and problems.
  • Communicate across multiple groups within UW Medicine as well as with customers.
  • Analyze current and proposed business practices and workflows to identify testing and training needs associated with change.
  • Actively seek out and contribute to process improvement efforts.
  • Unit test all changes associated with assigned project tasks.
  • Execute functional and integrated test scripts, tracking defects to ensure quality project deliverables.
  • Research, inform and recommend opportunities to apply business and technology solutions to areas of assigned responsibilities.

  • Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives.
  • Work with manager to set professional goals for career development.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 2+ years of progressively responsible IT experience, working within a software development lifecycle, including experience analyzing, designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining software applications.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated experience in the design, development and delivery of enterprise applications, and complex data integrations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relational database systems such as Oracle or SQL and subsequent knowledge of database structures, data definitions and data relationships with experience developing relational database solutions.
  • Extensive experience with SQL query languages.
  • Demonstrated experience developing reports using SSRS.
  • Demonstrated experience developing solutions using SSIS.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Visual C# or Microsoft Visual Basic
  • Demonstrated experience with MS Visual Studio
  • Demonstrated experience with commercial, off-the-shelf API development.
  • Responsibility in supporting large-scale enterprise customers, both internal and external.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing test plans and test cases.
  • Demonstrated end user support and documentation experience.
  • Ability to provide accurate work estimates.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, PhD, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the SumTotal Learning Management application and database structure.
  • Experience utilizing the SumTotal API’s in development efforts.
  • Experience with Identity Management concepts and processes.
  • Experience developing data interfaces and reports.
  • Previous experience working in an IT Healthcare application support setting.
  • Knowledge of security and privacy issues in the healthcare industry
    WORK CONDITIONS

  • This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment.
  • Must be able to work with a great deal of autonomy and independent judgment.
  • Must translate business objectives from senior leaders into learning objectives and audience rules that can be coded into the LMS application.
  • Must lead project and functional teams as assigned without direct supervisory authority (matrix organization).
  • Program operates within the confines of standard IT methodology: Design Review, IT Project Management, Change Control, Risk Assessment, and Code Management.
  • Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments.
  • UW Medicine LMS services all UW Medicine organizations – School of Medicine, University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Physicians, UW Neighborhood Clinics, Airlift Northwest and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
