Department Summary

The University of Oregon is one of only two Pacific Northwest members of the Association of American Universities and holds the distinction of a “very high research activity” ranking in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The UO enrolls more than 20,000 undergraduate and 3,600 graduate students representing all 50 states and nearly 100 countries. In recent years, the university has increased the diversity of its student body while raising average GPAs and test scores for incoming students. The UO’s 295-acre campus features state-of-the-art facilities in an arboretum-like setting within the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya people. The UO is located in Eugene, a vibrant city of 157,000 with a wide range of cultural and culinary offerings, a pleasant climate, and a community engaged in environmental and social concerns. The campus is within easy driving distance of the Pacific Coast, the Cascade Mountains, and Portland.
The Composition Program is one of the largest units on campus, serving approximately 7,000 students per year. Career Instructors and graduate student teachers in the program represent a range of teaching and research backgrounds that include culturally-responsive pedagogy, social justice, critical race theory, universal design, environmental studies, critical pedagogy, digital humanities, visual culture/media studies, and writing studies. Our teachers are encouraged to engage in a wide variety of professional development opportunities and some funding exists to support these endeavors. Composition Program faculty are campus leaders in pedagogical innovation and teaching-centered research.
We seek candidates specializing in Rhetoric and Composition or a closely related field. Competitive applicants will have the training and recent full-time experience teaching college-level argumentative writing to students from diverse backgrounds We seek candidates that can demonstrate their teaching excellence through multiple forms of evidence. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Position Summary

The University of Oregon’s English Department invites applications for non-tenure-track positions of Career Instructor in English to teach in the Composition Program beginning September 16, 2023. Successful applicants will join a vibrant teaching community of career instructors and graduate student teachers who have many opportunities for professional development and participation in program development. One or more positions will have a primary specialization in generalized writing instruction in the first-year writing program. One or more positions will have a primary specialization in professional, technical, and science writing and/or public speaking and writing.
Competitive applicants will have the training and recent full-time experience teaching college-level academic, expository, and/or argumentative writing whose pedagogy demonstrates a clear commitment to culturally responsive and anti-oppressive teaching practices. The course load is 3 per term, totaling 9 courses per year, teaching primarily in the lower division writing courses: WR 121 (Written Reasoning as Discovery and Inquiry), WR 122 (Written Reasoning as a Process of Argument), and WR 123 (Written Reasoning in the Context of Research). Typical enrollment in Composition Program courses ranges from 23 to 25 students per course. Depending on training, experience, and departmental needs, some Career Instructors may be asked to teach in other areas. or in upper-division WR courses. All teaching positions in English involve student advising and departmental service and participation in program assessment.
This is a non-tenure-track, nine-month position at 1.0 FTE. This position is a public employee of the state of Oregon and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between the university and United Academics of the University of Oregon (AFT Local 3209), which can be found here: https://www.uauoregon.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/CBA-2021.pdf. Career Instructors are eligible for promotion to Senior instructors after 18 terms of teaching. The salary floor is $44,064 and will be commensurate with experience. Minimum Requirements

• Previous training and recent evidence of teaching excellence in college-level academic, expository, and/or argumentative reading and writing to first-year students.
• M.A. in Rhetoric and Composition or a closely related field.
• Knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in an educational context.

Professional Competencies

• Demonstrated commitment to supporting and enhancing an inclusive and collaborative learning and working environment.
• Ability to provide inclusive, engaged, and research-led/informed teaching at the college level.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work effectively with a diverse range of students and colleagues, including those from historically marginalized communities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Track record of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in applicant’s pedagogy and teaching practices.
• Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, or related field.
• Demonstrated commitment to the field of composition and writing studies through teaching records, scholarship, and/or professional service.
