Located in Largo in the heart of Prince George’s County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services and serves as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince George’s County residents.



POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision, conducts healthcare associated infection (HAI) infection surveillance, investigates and monitors known or potential sources of suspected infections to determine the source and minimize the risk of exposure. Plans and coordinates activities related to infection prevention & control. Provides related education to staff and maintains relevant policies. Compiles data and prepares periodic reports concerning infections within the institution.

Principal Duties:

  • Assist clinical staff in developing departmental infection control policies & procedures.
  • Collaborates with Employee Health regarding healthcare worker vaccination program and post-exposure management for infectious disease exposures.
  • Participates in collaboratives and performance improvement initiatives and committees as needed to reduce HAI and risk of infection transmission.
  • Reviews microbiology reports, daily admissions and Emergency Department visits and medical records. Performs prevalence rounds and focused review regarding infection rates. Using above findings prepares reports on infection rates and identifies trends/patterns. Follows up with department or committee regarding Infection control issues, works to resolve any negative trend.
  • Communicates significant infections (e.g., MDRO) to the units/departments involved and to outside facilities as needed.
  • Provide infection prevention & control education to nursing, medical staff, and various allied health care staff on a regular basis and when needs arise.
  • Identifies and reports healthcare associated infections (HAI) monthly in the NHSN database as required by the State of MD or as prioritized per the infection prevention & control plan. Complete necessary data collection and prepare & present HAI data to Infection Control Committee and other hospital committees.
  • Identifies reportable conditions such as tuberculosis and reports to State Health Department.
  • Assists and conducts annual training on required infection prevention and occupational exposure prevention for employees, medical staff, and other hospital personnel7. Consults with healthcare workers via telephone or in-person concerning infection control issues in patient care areas and/or employee health.

Qualifications


Required:

  • Have a current license or registration in good standing as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist, physician or registered nurse in Maryland or compact state.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or taken within two (2) years of hire.
  • Infection control experience is preferred.
  • 2 years of clinical experience as an RN or microbiology experience as a Medical Technologist or certified in infection control (CIC) with equivalent experience is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of Nursing, Medical Technology, or a related field or equivalent is required.
