SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the Individual Giving Officer will be a key member of the Saint Louis Zoo’s (Zoo) Development Department. This position will use prospect research to identify and qualify mid-level and major giving prospects. Using the “Nonprofit Moves Management” model this position will develop and manage a portfolio of prospects by initiating (discovery), qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding relationships with individuals and foundations who partner financially with the Zoo.

Working closely with the development staff and senior leadership, this person will be responsible for qualifying major gift prospects of $25,000+ for the major gifts team while managing a portfolio of donors in the mid-level gift range of $1,000-$24,999. This fundraising professional will help donors accomplish their philanthropic goals by providing them with mid-level giving opportunities that align with the Zoo’s funding priorities, maintain high level of retention, and upgrading Zoo giving and engagement.

The IGO is responsible for performing the job functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, and values, of the Saint Louis Zoo overall and the Development Department. The MGO will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Updates the database with call notes and new information about donors.
  • Cultivates donor relationships by updating, stewarding, and asking donors to deepen their financial partnership with the Zoo.
  • Face-to-face visits to select donors for cultivation, solicitations, and stewardship efforts.
  • Learns about Zoo’s highest funding priorities and effectively communicates the mission to

  • Manages a portfolio of 400 – 500 donors.
  • Meets with Director of Major Gifts on a weekly basis for accountability and to discuss strategy and moves management actions.
  • Researches, identifies, and promotes reassignment of high capacity donors to the appropriate development professional.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience or knowledge of philanthropy, capital campaigns, and planned giving.
  • Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of 1-3 years of related experience in fundraising or similar field.
  • Possess initiative, mature judgment, exceptional organizational abilities, effective written and verbal communications skills and strong interpersonal skills. The ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions.
  • All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • CFRE certificate desired, but not required.

Must have the ability to reach, bend and lift approximately 10-20 lbs. Ability to conduct donor tours, drive a golf cart, and travel between WildCare Park, the Saint Louis Zoo, and other off-site meeting locations with donors.
