Job Description

The Director of Sports Performance is responsible for providing elite performance coaching to the Indiana Pacers’ players. As a pivotal member of a leading sports medicine department, they will work directly with all members of the department daily to ensure holistic, thorough, and effective care for our athletes. They must bring a progressive attitude with deep knowledge of athletic performance in elite sports, preferably basketball. They should demonstrate adaptability to player pathology and movement abnormalities to maximize training programs. They must be fluent and progressive in their knowledge and utilization of performance technology and its application to basketball. They must embrace the team and company values of continuous personal and organizational growth and development. They will mentor and develop the sports performance staff and delegate responsibilities within the department to maximize the strengths of each practitioner. They will also assist the sports medicine department with non-clinical / administrative matters involving the basketball team and staff. This position requires a highly detailed candidate with strong administrative skills and an ability to maintain highly confidential information. They are built to thrive in an elite high-performance environment and are current in their knowledge of research, technologies, best practices, and application strategies.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead all aspects of athletic development for the Indiana Pacers under the direction of the Senior Director of Medical Operations / Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Plan, develop, and implement periodized strength and conditioning programs for athletes in a team-based environment.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the sports performance staff and delegate responsibilities within the department to maximize the strengths of each practitioner.
  • Review and evaluate existing best scientific evidence for integration into the sports performance department.
  • Identify and integrate cutting-edge and appropriate technology / equipment into the sports performance department.
  • Collaborate with all members of the sports medicine staff regarding all aspects of care for the athletes.
  • Develop and implement high quality rehabilitation and preventive programming in coordination with sports medicine clinicians.
  • Create individualized return-to-play programming and criteria to assist in decision-making in collaboration with sports medicine clinicians.
  • Collaborate with the Performance Data Analyst to determine testing protocols and interpret results.
  • Establish effective communication methods to disseminate appropriate performance information to all relevant personnel.
  • Create and maintain contemporaneous documentation of testing, analytics, and programming data while adhering to all appropriate confidentiality standards.
  • Integrate sports science and data analytics into sports performance programming and activity level determination.
  • Assist with player assessment for personnel decisions including but not limited to the NBA draft, free agency, trades, and more.
  • Attend all Pacers’ team events including workouts, practices, games, and road trips. Travel with the team is a requirement of this position.
  • Comply with all NBA and PS&E standards and protocols.
  • Maintain NBA and PS&E HIPAA standards for confidentiality regarding all matters pertaining to the players and the organization.
  • Maintain weight room cleanliness and equipment upkeep.
  • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule that will include evenings, weekends, and possibly holidays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • At least five years of experience in elite team sports, preferably basketball, is required. Experience in professional basketball as a strength and conditioning coach is highly preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and annual or biannual CPR/AED training is required.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physiology, or related area of study is required. Education in athletic training, physical therapy, or biomechanics is highly preferred.
  • CSCS certification from the National Strength & Conditioning Association is required.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.) and general data entry. Ability to learn new systems and adapt to new technology.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret directions and technical diagrams.
