Job Description

Who You'll Work With

McKinsey’s Legal Department is seeking a collaborative, highly motivated Immigration Paralegal to join our team and provide overall support for the immigration legal function in North America with particular emphasis on the United States. You will serve as a central point of contact regarding immigration issues with foreign nationals as well as stakeholders within the following areas: recruiting, human resources, professional development, mobility, learning, meeting planning and in-house and external immigration counsel.

What You'll Do

You will be the key point of contact for U.S. (and to a more limited extent the rest of North America) for answering questions and providing information on the firm’s immigration policies including sponsorship of visas (H-1B, L-1, etc.) and green cards.
Responsibilities include: managing communications with foreign nationals, offices, various stakeholders in PD, HR, recruiting and others as well as with the internal immigration legal team and external counsel; supporting in-house immigration counsel to manage, prepare and respond to a high volume of communications, including the drafting and storage of template “stationary” emails; joining one-on-one calls with in-house counsel and foreign national colleagues to take notes/provide information and follow up with execution of any necessary next steps; drafting broadcast e-mails and urgent “alert” memos on legislative, policy and practice updates with tight turnaround times for review and sign-off by in-house immigration counsel; working independently or with immigration counsel to prepare informational “packs” (using PowerPoint, Word and Excel) on various immigration topics.
You will work with North American HR team (NA-HR) and North American Mobility & Immigration Eligibility Center of Excellence (NA MIE) to review and revise template employment/travel verification letters as necessary and to partner with NA-HR on any complex or unique travel letter requests; draft work and travel support letters, such as TNs and B-1s, for review and sign-off by in-house immigration counsel; draft various applications (e.g., I-983 training plans, H-1B cap registration, etc.); review and sign off on immigration applications, petitions, LCAs and other filings prepared by external legal counsel; coordinate and manage PERM recruitment steps with external counsel and in-house team (including posting of NOF, intranet posting, work with stakeholders to provide guidance on resume reviews process); conduct briefing calls to prepare foreign national colleagues for work visa consular applications and describe various green card processes; work with immigration counsel and various stakeholders to analyze and confirm case strategy.
Your responsibilities will also include managing electronic tools and databases to assist in the efficient functioning of the immigration legal process; providing employment data from internal HR systems to external counsel as part of the case initiation process; preparing monthly and ad hoc reports providing statistical analyses on McKinsey’s Immigration program including status reports from external counsel’s electronic portal to offices, practices and leadership to ensure maintenance of legal status, timely initiation of nonimmigrant extensions and green card applications and analyses to identify a variety of other immigration related data.
Other responsibilities as assigned including, but not limited to: conducting basic immigration legal research and prepare summaries of same using both on-line and hard copy resources; providing I-9 assistance to offices, including answering questions on how to complete I-9 requirements from a legal aspect.

Qualifications

  • Exercises clear and appropriate judgment in a range of situations

  • 2+ years of business immigration paralegal/HR experience, preferably including in-house experience
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
  • Excels at creative problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Proactively drive improvement initiatives
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong client service orientation
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Proficiency in ServiceNow is a plus
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills and attention to detail with full ownership of initiatives and tasks
  • Experience working with the following case types: F-1 CPT/OPT, H-1B, L-1, TN, H-1B1, E-3, J-1, O-1, and employment and marriage based green card processes
  • Ability to build and leverage a strong network across many functions
