Arlington County Intern
This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program
Arlington County

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with an in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation
  • This Interns must be ready to begin employment by September 1, 2023.
  • This is not a fully remote opportunity.
  • Interns are expected to participate in both in-office work assignments and as part of an in-person training cohort.

Human Resources Intern
Department of Human Services

The Department of Human Services (DHS) is hiring a Human Resources Intern for its Human Resources Bureau. DHS provides services for older adults and persons with disabilities, child and family services, physical and behavioral healthcare programs as well as employment, housing and public assistance. The population served is an ethnically and culturally diverse community. The Human Resources Intern will gain experience applying federal and state regulations relating to Human Resources responsibilities which impact employees within DHS. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with teams across a full spectrum of human services disciplines, including mental health, social services, public health, and government administration.

This Human Resources Intern work under the guidance of a mentor and will assist with the following responsibilities:
  • Updating the HRIS system to document new hires and compensation changes;
  • Updating employee records (both paper and electronic);
  • Liaising with staffing analysts and departmental HR personnel to assist with the hiring process.
  • Processing background checks including for Central Registry;
  • Participating in State required HR audits by reviewing input for accuracy and analyzing anomalies;
  • Completing the onboarding process for new employees including meeting with new employees and processing offer letters;
  • Creating staff trainings and updating developing policies; and

Selection Criteria

Minimums: Recent, 2022 and/or 2023 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship will have:

  • Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.
  • Preferred minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • No significant professional-level work experience (less than one year) in internship field.
  • Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.
Degree Requirements: Human Resources, Public Administration, Psychology or a related field.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following.
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred. Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability or willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.


Additional Information

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. with flexibility and telework opportunities.
This position is full-time 40 hours/week, with some flexibility. Position will combine remote and onsite work – generally 1-2 days per week in the office, and the remainder remote.

This is not a full-time remote opportunity.

Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.
