Job Description
Overview:
Under the direction of the CNO, the house supervisor has 24-hour responsibility for the effective implementation of the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the hospital and the nursing department and their effect on patient care in a designated unit. The nurse manager has authority to make decisions on that unit in the areas of patient care, human resource, and financial management.
Responsibilities:
  • Monitors/maintains unit compliance with regulatory, accrediting and hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.
  • Demonstrates the ability to cope with and manage change, as well as help others do the same.
  • Effectively communicates departmental, organization, and industry information to staff.
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Consults with patients/families through primary nurse request, direct family request, and/or direct assessment of patient/family response to hospitalization. Assesses patient/significant other survey responses regarding nursing care and services.
  • Attains all agreed to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization’s overall mission.
  • Manages human resources to assure quality services and promote positive employee relations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate the hospital’s mission, vision, and values, as well as departmental goals, to all staff.
  • Is responsible for the fiscal management of department; assures proper utilization of organization’s financial resources.
  • Oversees unit CQI program which monitors and evaluates critical aspects of care.
  • Is responsible for department’s operational excellence; ensures department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Assists the divisional director in development, implementation and evaluation of on-going service programs that assure quality nursing and patient care programs consistent with hospital mission.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and interdepartmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Incorporates quality improvement data and/or patient satisfaction data into departmental goals.
  • Defines performance objectives and metrics for the department and assesses the level of competence of staff in a timely manner.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to other leaders and staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management, and outcome achievement.
  • Promotes a positive image of professional nursing and serves as a role model to staff.
  • Demonstrates fiscal accountability for department resources and the ability to achieve outcomes within allocated resources.
  • Responsible for effective and efficient fiscal management of department operations to ensure proper utilization of organizational and financial resources.
  • Responsible for effective human resources management to achieve and maintain quality services and positive employee relations.
  • Accurately identifies real/potential problems affecting the service and implements solutions with follow-through and communication.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of regulations applicable to patient care and/or other department functions.
  • Maintains current license and knowledge of nursing care requirements for all patients on the unit. Assesses need for personal growth and development and takes the initiative in seeking opportunities to meet this need.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources within the institution to provide consultation, education, technical, or informational services as needed for self, staff, and patients.
  • Fosters a service which is consistent with the patient care beliefs and shared management philosophy of the department.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to a healthy work environment by modeling the desired behaviors and encouraging those in others.
  • Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem solve ongoing issues that impact departmental/organizational goals and/or patient care delivery.
Qualifications:
  • Five years Acute clinical experience preferred At least 1 year of administrative house supervisor experience or equivalent
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in relevant area of nursing practice
  • Evidence of this includes, but is not limited to, effective communication skills, ability to deal well with people, ability to problem solve, ability to confront/resolve issues, ability to motivate others, ability to plan, organize, and direct the activities of others
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Basic Computer skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and potential managerial competency
  • B.S. with concentration in nursing preferred
  • Current CA RN license
  • BLS ACLS PALS preferred
