Summary
Stanford Anatomic Pathology & Clinical Laboratories provides pathology and laboratory testing services to patients from Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health and outside institutions. We are committed to provide outstanding test quality and case evaluations to bring our patients the diagnosis needed to plan care.
Stanford’s Clinical Pathology Service diagnoses disease based on the laboratory analysis of bodily fluids, such as blood, urine, and tissue homogenates or extracts using the tools of chemistry, microbiology, hematology and molecular pathology.

A Brief Overview
The Histotechnician III embeds and cuts a wide variety of surgical and research tissue, including autopsy specimens, tiny biopsies, lymph nodes, breast tissue and bone marrow. Sections paraffin embedded tissue at 1-7 microns and mounts on microscope slides. Performs a variety of staining techniques, including immunohistochemical procedures, for microscopic evaluation. A histotechnologist III independently plans and completes daily work, resolving most technical problems that arise, and interprets policy in terms of established objectives and procedures. Provides advice and guidance to histotechnicians, laboratory assistants and technicians. May be assigned to the Neuropathology Laboratory, Dermatology Clinic as required. Responsible for daily operation in absence of Histology Supervisor.

What you will do

  • Assumes responsibility for laboratory technical results.
  • Must comply with all applicable health and safety policies.
  • Assists in training other histotechnicians, lab assistants and technicians.
  • Perform routine H&E stains as well as special stains such as Warthin Starry, Dieterele, and Immunoperoxidase.
  • Demonstrates an ability and willingness to assume independent responsibility.
  • Cut high quality 1-3 micron sections of small and difficult biopsy specimens.
  • Cut 75-100 blocks per day while maintaining a high quality product.
  • Perform STAT GMS stains and heart biopsies.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Performs complex and unusual procedures requiring knowledge and skills gained through experience.
  • Perform quality control on sections and staining procedures to ensure a high quality finished product.
  • Expected behaviors include adaptability to change, collaboration toward common goals, is self motivated and takes initiative.
  • Expected communication skills involve active listening and proper email etiquette.
  • Assumes supervisory duties as needed.
  • Maintains cooperative and professional attitude in when interacting with others both inter- and intradepartmentally.


Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent


Experience Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible directly related work experience

  • Knowledge and technical proficiency in specialty areas assigned within the laboratory

  • Knowledge of methods of fixing, cutting, and embedding tissue sections
  • Ability to organize and prioritize specimens and tasks to produce a high quality product in an efficient and timely manner

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $52.76 - $59.42 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
