Job Description
Job Purpose:


The Hill District Community Historian will be responsible for providing a lived experience element to an ongoing project between Hill CDC and a University Partner. The individual will be tasked with researching and documenting the history of important Hill District sites, with a focus on preserving and sharing the stories of Hill District community members who will share their experiences through interviews and narratives. This person will collect at least 36 video and/or audio stories and will receive technical training to complete their mission.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Familiarity with the history and culture of the Hill District community. Hill District residency is preferred, but not required.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ideal Qualifications:
  • Work with Hill CDC, University Partners and project partners through email, attendance at in-person meetings, and via Zoom
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to connect with community members of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Document and archive historical materials, including photographs, documents, and artifacts, for future reference and use.
  • Attend and participate in relevant community events and activities to promote the preservation and sharing of the community's history.
  • Collaborate with the Hill CDC and University partners to develop materials and that share the history of the Hill District community through physical and virtual spaces.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a willingness to learn and adapt as needed.
  • Experience collaborating with community organizations and education institutions.
  • Maintain accurate/organized records of all research and documentation.
  • Conduct and record interviews on the history of Hill District locations with community members of the Hill District
  • Experience conducting research, interviews, and/or archival work with the ability to work on a computer in various applications
  • A passion for the Hill District and its stories
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community members and local organizations to collect oral histories and other relevant information about the Hill District community.
  • Ability to create draft flyers and other promotional communications
  • Access to computer and mobile device
  • Provide written summaries in multiple digital formats; collect and transfer and post videos and other files as required.


Physical Demands:


The individual will also be required to stand, sit, and traverse the Hill for extended periods of time during research and community engagement activities. Having a vehicle is a benefit, but not a requirement.


Working Conditions:


The Hill District Community Historian will work in a variety of settings, including community centers, libraries, archives, and outdoor spaces. The individual may be required to work some evenings and weekends to attend community events, activities, social gatherings or interviews scheduled in advance.


This is a short-term position with a monthly $1,250 stipend. This pilot will last through September 30th, when the next steps and the project will be explored. The Hill District Community Historian will report to the Hill CDC and collaborate closely with the university team and project partners. Payment will be issued as a 1099 payment.
