Position Information


Uvalde County sits at the foothills of the Texas Hill Country region and has a long and colorful history. Earliest settlers to the area were the Comanche, Apache, and Seminole native Americans. The county and city of Uvalde, the largest city, and County Seat, was named after Coahuila governor Juan de Ugalde. James Bowie guided silver prospectors into the northern part of the county seeking their fortunes. Famous old west figures like Pat Garrett and King Fisher and the Newton Gang walked the streets and road the trails here. Former Governor Dolph Briscoe and Vice-President of the United States John Nance Garner called Uvalde home. Hollywood stars Dale Evans and Matthew McConaughey were born in Uvalde.
Uvalde County has numerous clear water rivers and streams to enjoy. The TxDOT office in Uvalde County is responsible for maintaining the 765 lane miles of State and US highways which span across the 1559 square miles of the county. US 90 and US 83 intersect in the heart of Uvalde, two of the longest highways in the United States. Uvalde’s TxDOT office is a major resource to improve the safety of the hundreds of thousands of travelers in the area, and provides guidance and assistance to our transportation partners in the city and county roadway departments.

Starting Yearly Salary:

General Transportation Tech I: $38,132 - $42,146/yearly

General Transportation Tech II: $40,385 - $44,636/yearly

This position is for (1) General Transportation Tech I, or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications. TxDot reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors.

Position Description


Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:
General Transp Tech I

  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.

General Transp Tech II

Includes all duties listed above in addition to the following

  • Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.


Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

General Transp Tech I: NONE (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

General Transp Tech II: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial Driver’s License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
