Job Description

Duties

This is a career-seasonal appointment. Career-seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately the middle of February to the beginning of January, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. When your services are not required due to lack of work, lack of funds, weather conditions or for other reasons, you will be placed in a non-work/non-pay status. You will have the option to continue your health coverage while in non-pay status.
Serves as the park's heavy mobile and power equipment mechanic. Performs duties such as:

  • Performs heavy equipment operations in sometimes harsh environmental conditions.
  • Maintains watercraft.
  • Welds and fabricates parts.
  • Diagnoses and repairs deficiencies in electrical systems as they affect mechanical systems, such as vehicle electrical systems, generator automated switchgear, and pumps.
  • May perform other maintenance work and operations as needed.
  • Maintaining, diagnosing, repairing, overhauling and rebuilding heavy mobile systems and vehicles; electrical power generating units and switchgear up to 100 kilowatts, medium voltage distribution systems; marine inboard and outboard engines; and electrical motors.
  • Operates motor vehicles.
Selectee will travel via small aircraft or boat in remote settings. Selectee will also be moved between King Salmon and Lake and Peninsula County (Brooks Camp), Alaska, depending on work needs.
Government housing may be available but limited.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required but please do not submit a copy of your driver's license at this time. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Motorboat operation required. Selectee will receive appropriate training in motorboat operations and will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  • Two options, read carefully: Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement, a current medical certificate, and no disqualifying offenses. Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and where surfaces to be coated or the parts of the systems worked on are hard to reach and require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Regular lifting and carrying items up to and in excess of 50 lbs. regular lifting, carrying, and setting of supplies of weight over 100 lbs.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside in both heat (up to 90F) and extreme cold (down to - 45F). The incumbent is required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective clothing that are sometimes uncomfortable and heavy. Wind, snow, rain, and ice and other outdoor weather conditions may exist. Biting insects are nuisance and are common and can be debilitating.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

  • Documentation for Interagency/Career Transition Assistance Plan consideration if you are a displaced Federal employee within the local commuting area. You must include: 1) Proof you are a displaced Federal employee, e.g., RIF Separation Notice, Notice of Proposed Removal, etc; 2) SF-50s (Notifications of Personnel Action) showing career/conditional tenure competitive status, promotion potential and duty location; and 3) your most recent performance appraisal. To exercise selection priority, displaced or surplus Federal employees must be rated well-qualified or above 85 on the rating criteria for this position.
Do not submit photographs with your application package. Documents with photographs may not be seen by hiring officials - you must remove your image from any badges, licenses, etc. An easy way to cover photos is to use a small piece of paper and place over the photographs and photograph likenesses, and then take a picture of the document for uploading.
