This is a rotational position in which the selected employee will work a schedule with 3 months on shift at a time, 1 month off, at Earackson Air Station (EAS), located in Sheyma, AK. While working on-site housing is provided in the form of a dormitory facility. All meals are furnished through the cafeteria. Transportation to EAS from Anchorage, AK is provided by government sponsored aircraft. This is a negotiated union position, and the starting hourly pay rate is $39.48 per hour.

Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Responds to emergency call outs and performs emergency field repairs on fire apparatus and related equipment.
- Attends regular training to maintain basic and advanced skills and certifications.
- Develops specifications for new fire apparatus and equipment.
- Perform any other related duties as required• Analyzes malfunctions, and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, bulldozers, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
- Assists the Fire Chief with the development of specifications for new fire apparatus and equipment.
- Performs emergency operations as required
- Performs Emergency Response Team duties as needed.
- Ensures fire apparatus conforms to commercial Department of Transportation and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
- Ensures pump systems provide appropriate volumes of water at specified pressures during periodic and required annual pump testing.
- Performs related duties like the above in scope and function as required
- Performs general maintenance of all fire equipment including oiling and lubricating various components.
- Performs normal maintenance on shop equipment and maintains cleanliness of shop area as required.
- Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions.
- Inspects and tests fire apparatus, vehicles, and related equipment to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions.
- Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
- Determines preventative maintenance needs, provides necessary maintenance and repairs for all fire vehicles, including heavy fire apparatus, and equipment.
- Provides classroom and hands-on instruction to Fire Department personnel pertaining to maintenance and operation of fire apparatus and related equipment.
- Dismantles, cleans, and reassembles equipment using hoists, hand tools, and other equipment.
- Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
- Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
- Serves as Fuel/Re-Supply Barge augmentee.
- Checks operating efficiency of fire vehicles, heavy fire apparatus, and fire mechanical equipment.
- Performs snow removal duties as required.
- Provides for overall management of the Fire Department fleet of emergency response apparatus, and staff/support vehicles.
- Repairs and adjusts engines, transmissions, brake systems, hydraulic systems, water pumps and accessories.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Welds broken parts and structural members.
- Determines stock needs and orders and maintains replacement parts and supplies.
- Common safety practices and protective equipment used on a construction site.
- Working cooperatively and safely with others on common projects.

Mandatory
- Successful completion of a formal motor vehicle mechanic apprenticeship.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquires
- Level 2 Fire Apparatus EVT Certification and Level 1 Ambulance EVT certification
- F1 Maintenance, Inspection & Testing of Fire Apparatus, F2 Design & Performance Standards, E0 Inspection, Maintenance & Testing, E-1 Design and performance of Fire Apparatus/Ambulance Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications.
- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
- T2 Truck, Diesel Engines, T4 Heavy-Duty Truck, Brakes, T5 Heavy-Duty Truck, Suspension & Steering, A-4 Suspension & Steering, A-5 Brakes Automotive/Medium Heavy-Duty Service Excellence (ASE) certifications; and,
- Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- U.S. citizen.
- Five (5) years’ experience with heavy construction and snow removal equipment.
- Four (4) years’ experience in a motor pool or commercial maintenance facility.
- Three (3) years of experience in fire apparatus repair and maintenance work, and
- Experience with ARFF vehicles.
- Crane rigging/signal person certification.
- Previous experience working in a remote location.
- Previous experience working on a military installation.
