POSITION SUMMARY:

Advancing Our Mission and Cause:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The Health and Wellness Director supports and influences community health as a part of a cause driven leadership team. The individual in this role is responsible for the daily operations of all Wellness programs and building strong, positive membership experiences through traditional YMCA Signature Programs, management of the Wellness Center Floor, Personal Training Programs, Small Group Fitness Programs, Group Exercise Classes and Chronic Disease prevention.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Developing and Inspiring People:

  • Evaluate staff performance, identifying areas for improvement and recognizing successes.
  • Compile payroll bi-weekly and monitor daily hours for staff.
  • Cultivate the professional development of staff for growth and success.
  • Conduct staff meetings and trainings to foster success and growth.
  • Address staffing issues and concerns.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule and supervise staff and volunteers to ensure quality programming is being delivered to participants consistent with the YMCA philosophy and mission.

Building Relationships:

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations and partners.
  • Onboarding, supervision, growth and retention of members.
  • Provide exceptional service to all staff, members, volunteers and guests.
  • Teach classes, train or deliver direct wellness services to participants as needed or assigned.
  • Model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Respond to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.

Leading Operations:

  • Assist in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Create a maintenance plan and long-term strategy for capital improvements.
  • Cooperate with other Southern District YMCA staff in the planning, promotion and implementation of special events; and maintain positive working relationships with peers on special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Promote, staff, supervise, and market programs of the YMCA to various groups in the community.
  • Attend all meetings required of full time staff.
  • Monitor usage of fitness equipment and make recommendations for new equipment as needed.
  • Purchase all equipment necessary as budgeted and approved for the success of the YMCA and department.
  • Know and follow the YMCA established business procedures.
  • Be a content expert on YMCA Health and Wellness, identifying trends and needs of members of all ages.
  • Responsible for program enrollment, retention, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Oversee group exercise class schedules that are current with trends and community/member needs.
  • Develop, manage and monitor the Wellness operating budget to meet or exceed fiscal objectives.
  • Promote membership and fitness opportunities available in the YMCA.
  • Compile/report on program statistics. Monitor and evaluate effectiveness and participation of programs.
  • Establish new and expand on existing program activities within the community, including chronic disease prevention programing.
  • Coordinate use of facilities for program activities and events.
  • Implement and supervise safety and emergency procedures as they relate to both personnel and members.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Responsible for upkeep of equipment and ensuring uncompromising levels of cleanliness and safety.
  • Serve as Director on Duty/Manager on Duty as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments.
  • Previous customer service, sales or related experience preferred.
  • Committing to support and further our anti-racist work as an organization. Actively works to continue to recruit and hire diverse staff and volunteers.
  • Current nationally recognized Personal Trainer certification, OR CSCS, OR nationally recognized Group Exercise Certification, OR the willingness to update certification within 2 months in the case of a lapsing national certification.
  • Ability to be proactive and solution-oriented.
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff development, program development, volunteerism, facility and property management and sound financial practices.
  • Ability to effectively delegate responsibilities to others and support them as necessary.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with standard business database. Daxko experience a plus.
  • Experience developing and managing a budget necessary.
  • Ability to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations.
  • BS Degree or elated major major studies in business, nutrition, wellness, public health, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology or related preferred.
  • Integrate and lead groups of diverse individuals and departments in collaborative activities aimed at advancing wellness throughout the community.
  • Multi-year experience in direct wellness service and the willingness to continue some hours of direct service as part of the role. For example: group exercise class instruction, one on one or group personal training OR direct service nutrition and dietetics.
  • Demonstrated ability of strong communication and influencing skills along with public speaking and writing.
  • Dynamic personality with a skill-set that is able to educate and motivate the Fitness Center Staff to be passionate about their job and the SDYMCA.
  • 5+ years of program management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency desired.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task to meet deadlines and work efficiently both individually and as a team.
  • Strong visual and auditory ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • 3+ years of related experience in managing and training staff, teambuilding and coordinating schedules required.
  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of YMCA and the respective roles of volunteerism and staff.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred or acheived in first year.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow multi-step instructions required.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified or willing to become certified within 30 days.
  • Other relevant YMCA Trainings for position, including Redwoods Risk Management within 30 days and Wellness specific within first 6 months.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to speak and write concisely and effectively communicate needs.
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to view computer monitor and enter data for long periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, push, and pull.
  • Ability to walk, stand or sit for long periods of time.
