Job Description
Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Teacher, prepares materials for the classroom, ensures safety of students and staff, assists with meal service, and helps implement developmentally appropriate curriculum. Guides and directs volunteers and children.

Position Specific Duties

  • Assists in the implementation of the program’s policies and procedures and Positive Behavior Supports in facilitating social and emotional development of children.
  • Completes observations documenting children’s strengths and areas for growth.
  • Assists in the planning and implementing of a developmentally appropriate classroom environment and curriculum.
  • Assists with meal services and meal reports.
  • Prepares and maintains classroom materials and a clean environment.
  • Supports implementation of an individual education plan for each child.
  • Encourages experimentation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice making; asks open-ended questions and listens respectfully to children.
  • Assists with the implementation of parent involvement plans including evening parent services as assigned.
  • Assists Teacher in maintaining accurate written records, including ongoing assessments, anecdotal observations of children and other required forms.
  • Assumes responsibility for the classroom in the absence of the teacher.
General Duties
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Promotes and encourages parent involvement.
  • Attends training sessions and participates in training opportunities.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
  • Reports suspected child abuse in accordance with Oregon Statute and Head Start procedures.
  • Interacts with children, families and community members in a supportive and professional manner.
  • Works as a team with community agencies and other staff in providing services to children and families.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have, or be able to obtain, Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within two years of hire date
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds of the College’s community, students and employees; demonstrated commitment to promoting access and diversity
  • One year of experience working with preschool-age children
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on a daily basis
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual skills: oral and written fluency in English with fluency also in Spanish, Russian or another language that meets community/department’s needs
  • Associates degree in Early Childhood Education

Additional Qualifications and/or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Additional Qualifications

  • Oregon food handler’s card, must be obtained within 30 days of hire date Infant/child first aid/CPR, must be obtained within 60 days of hire date
  • Must be enrolled in the Oregon Central Background Registry prior to beginning employment and enrollment must be maintained throughout employment
  • Post-offer fitness for duty evaluation, must be obtained within 30 days of hire date:
    • TB screening
    • Health appraisal

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • High personal integrity and sound professional ethics
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of child development and/or early childhood best practices
  • High performance through creativity, positive spirit, and multi-tasking
  • Knowledge of or ability to establish working relationships with staff

Works assigned schedule, and exhibits regular and predictable attendance. Work is sometimes performed in an emotional and stressful environment.
