Position Overview


Gilead's Information Technology (IT) organization supports Gilead business strategies and operations by taking the lead on design, delivery, monitoring and maintenance of end-to-end technology solutions to enable more efficient business operations and faster, more effective achievement of business strategies and goals. All IT functions work closely with business leads and other internal and external partners to develop and maintain in-depth understanding of business needs and objectives in both business and technology realms. IT leaders play a critical role in defining short- and long-range technical strategies to support business needs and coordinating, leading, and managing IT teams to deliver and maintain technology solutions. IT leaders and their teams stay abreast of dynamics and evolutions in their areas of expertise to proactively recommend future solutions or other opportunities to the business.


You will typically lead a global IT function with a large team of both direct and indirect reports, which involves managing other people leaders and setting the short- and long-range technical strategies, plans, infrastructure development and roadmap for our largest and most complex business groups and/or cross-functional workstreams. You and your team will typically be responsible for a broad portfolio of projects and deliverables across multiple business groups and workstreams. You will typically be a standing member of the Leadership Team in the assigned area and may be a standing member of the IT Leadership Team. You will conceive, set, and oversee execution against the assigned IT function's short- and long-range technical strategy. You will be responsible for the team's results, including staffing, methods, quality, compliance, and costs. You will identify, recommend, forecast, and mange resources to deliver against assigned work, including projects and ongoing support to assigned technologies. You will recruit, on-board, and develop individuals in your team. You will review and recommend business processes and other opportunities to leverage best practices and drive for continuous improvement. You will lead continuous improvement efforts, such as SOPs, business process and other tools that impact and improve IT ways of working. You will play a key role in setting and maintaining the culture within your team and the broader IT organization - a culture of high-performance, data-driven decision-making, value-driven prioritization, quality governance, and compliance.


Specific Responsibilities & Skills


The Head of IT PDM will report to the Vice President, Head of IT Business Systems and be responsible for overseeing functions including:


  • Management: Oversee PDM IT group including employees and contractors and improve customer and patient experience, improve speed to market, reduce cost per asset and help optimize agency spend across PDM IT
  • Strategy: Set the objectives, priorities and goals of the organization and ensure KPI attainment is achieved; Evolve operations, optimizing enablement and build engagement analytics that will demonstrate transparency and foster trust; Integrate cross-functional perspectives (Biologics, Supply Chain, Logistics, PLM, Serialization, Manufacturing) into strategic assessments and recommendations
  • Data & Analytics: Develop and implement plans for roadmaps for the information data and process needs of the business areas; Develop customer insights, execute customer profile mastering and authentication, leverage AI/ML to develop advanced insights across PDM capabilities and utilize data inputs to recommend the best action
  • Leadership: Serve as a leader with a vision for PDM IT, attract and develop top talent, get results, possess a strategic mindset, handle ambiguity and complexity, optimize work processes and drive engagement; Ability to delegate with confidence in outcomes with the highest standard of service to customers
  • Execute on Current Strategy: Build a scalable, agile foundation and mindset of capabilities, differentiated through intelligence and information, ensure an optimal customer experience, pursue long-term transformation while gaining incremental short-term value and work towards customer engagement optimization leveraging all inputs
  • Business Partnership: Serve as IT counterpart to Chief PDM Officer Organization and support their organization’s work to accelerate patient access to Gilead medications. Understand the value drivers of the business and ensure deep business engagement so that IT is aware of the functions’ strategy and goals to identify new or enhanced capabilities and plan relevant investments in technology solutions and services
  • Improve Speed to Value: Continue work to invest in cloud-first business architecture, ensuring scalability to meet unanticipated business demand and continuously invest in innovation to incubate new opportunities for differentiated growth


Essential Duties And Job Functions


General responsibilities for this position will include (but are not limited to) the following:


  • Leads or otherwise participates in special projects that can advance capabilities, ways of working, and other continuous improvements
  • Leads and manages a team of direct reports and may manage other people leaders. Hires, develops, and retains diverse top talent in the team. Sets clear and elevating goals for the team and individuals direct reports
  • Leads IT initiatives and existing operations in the assigned business area and/or other IT workstreams
  • Coaches direct reports on their performance, development and career interests
  • Plays a leadership role in advising business and IT leaders on future-state industry / domain evolutions and opportunities
  • Where applicable, manages vendor deliverables associated with own area
  • When applicable, acts as global lead on large-scale, complex IT projects
  • Identifies and recommends team, budget, and other resources to enable achievement of short- and long-range objectives and plans
  • Ensures team and assigned work comply with established practices, policies, and processes and any regulatory or other requirements
  • Sets the short- and longer-range technical strategy, objectives, and work plans for assigned area
  • Routinely consults with IT and business executives to help envision future direction and prioritize investment and other key strategic business decisions
  • May be a standing member of the overall IT Leadership Team
  • Typically acts a standing member of the Leadership Team within the assigned area with additional responsibilities for developing the area's short- and long-range strategies, infrastructure, and capabilities
  • Expert experience in relevant platforms include, but not limited to: Kinaxis, GILDA2, Maximo, MES, LIMS, SOTI, Salesforce, Veeva Vault


Basic Qualifications


  • 18+ years’ relevant experience with AA
  • Ideally, significant experience providing input and direction on large-scale IT or related investments and budgets
  • Extensive experience and proven effectiveness contributing expert input into longer-range IT and business strategies and roadmaps for relevant area / domain
  • Experience in business/industry (beyond IT), managing cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders
  • Extensive experience leading IT or related teams as a formal people manager
  • Extensive IT experience in a corporate or other relevant business environment
  • Computer Science or related discipline is preferred
  • 14+ years’ relevant experience with MS / MA / MBA
  • Extensive experience leading large and highly complex IT projects at the cross-functional or enterprise-level, with a focus on Agile
  • Significant experience managing IT consultants and vendors
  • 16+ years’ relevant experience with BS / BA
  • Extensive experience supporting IT integrations and cloud transformations in a corporate or other relevant business environment
  • IT experience in support of business areas in life sciences is preferred
  • 20+ years’ relevant experience with High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Track record of participation and thought leadership in external forums / associations or other entities that influence the direction of domain of expertise


Preferred Qualifications


  • Regarded as a thought leader in own domain
  • Role may be also be located in one of Gilead’s manufacturing locations
  • When needed, ability to travel
  • Knowledge of IT security, quality and risk management requirements relevant to assigned domain
  • Familiar with many technologies and understands their capabilities and limitations
  • Understands UX principles, practices and techniques and is able to apply to IT solutions to ensure a good user experience
  • In-depth knowledge of all IT functions and services is preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence leading large and complex teams
  • Advanced business and financial acumen and able to apply this to strategically evaluate business, economic and technical trade-offs of possible solutions and options for both the short- and longer-range
  • Strong leadership presence with demonstrated ability to lead without authority and influence programs, projects and/or initiatives
  • Expert-level of knowledge of IT architectural principles, practices, standards, methods and tools across the spectrum of end-to-end solution design, and the latest trends and evolutions in own domain, as evidenced by proven track record in leading large-scale and highly complex IT projects
  • Thorough knowledge of SDLC and SLC relevant to business functions and their business and technology needs, including knowledge of the multiple IT functions involved
  • Ability to distill complex matters into a clear business case and roadmap for execution. Demonstrated ability to align other leaders and garner their commitment and engagement to cross-functional strategies, plans and strategic objectives
  • Knowledge of or aptitude to learn regulatory requirements relevant to the biopharma industry
  • Knowledge of best practices in IT or related project management
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, e.g., AWS, and migration requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of Agile and proven abilities to apply Agile methodologies to create IT solutions to meet business needs and objectives
  • Thorough knowledge of key programming languages and requirements relevant to assigned domain

The salary range for this position is: $266,815.00 - $345,290.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
