Job Description

This full-time, 12-month position is responsible for all aspects of the baseball program, This position oversees full time Assistant Coaches and a Director of Baseball Operations, and is responsible for the overall management and performance of the baseball program including but not limited to: the recruitment and training of student-athletes, strategic game scheduling and management, student-athlete development, travel coordination, fundraising, budget management, equipment purchases, public and community relations, parental relations, and health, safety and well-being of student athletes.

Full-time appointment, renewable on a contract basis. Willingness and ability to work non-traditional schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Travel required.

Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Coaching

o Full responsibility for coaching and training Northwestern Men’s Baseball team; develops and conducts all in-season and out-of-season sessions as deemed necessary and appropriate.

o Has responsibility for psychological preparation of team in both pre-game and post-game; developing motivational approach to game.

o Organizes teaching procedures for Men’s Baseball staff. Conducts team meetings and assignments as necessary.

o Continues to develop comprehensive knowledge of Baseball in decision-making, delegating authority and in setting objectives.

  • Administrative

o Assists the designated Sport Administrator in the development of a nationally recognized playing schedule.

o Directs and manages staff of Assistant Baseball Coaches. Delegates and prioritizes administrative responsibilities to assistants.

o Conducts annual staff evaluations.

o Responsible for presenting to the Deputy Director of Athletics and Associate Director of Athletics for Business a projected annual budget in the areas of responsibility for approval. Accountable for expense control compliance and administration of annual budget. Implements Department operational procedures and policies.

o Responsible for working with the Athletic Business Office in making team and individual travel arrangements for competitions and off-campus practice, and for the conduct and appearance of the team when traveling as representatives of Northwestern University.

  • Recruiting

o Responsible for the national recruitment of top student-athletes, commensurate with the admissions qualifications of Northwestern University who are capable of successfully competing at the Big Ten level. Maintain good relations with parents of prospective and current student-athletes.

o Must be fully knowledgeable and adhere to all rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference (as applicable), and Northwestern University as amended from time to time.

  • Student Affairs

o Demonstrates interest in academic progress of student-athletes. Work closely with Academic Services in solving and preventing academic problems.

o Cooperates with team physicians and Sports Medicine staff regarding health care and decisions of practice and participation of student-athletes.

  • Alumni Relations, Public Relations, and Development

o Responsible for the maintenance of sound alumni relations. In cooperation with the Athletic Development staff also responsible for promoting and participating in various alumni events.

o Assists Athletic Development staff in fund-raising efforts on behalf of the Department and the University.

o Responsible for maintaining good public relations with the public news media, and working with the Athletic Communications department in promoting Northwestern University. Maintain amicable public relations with faculty, staff, students and media of the University, friends, alumni support groups and secondary school coaches.

  • Other

o Reports to the Vice President of Athletics and Recreation and the designated Sport Administrator and faithfully and diligently carry out other Department-related duties as assigned.

o Demonstrates a cooperative attitude towards all sports in the Intercollegiate and Recreational programs.

o Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.

o Responsible for adhering to all Department and University continuing education initiatives and required certifications and trainings.

o Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Plans, organizes and schedules in an efficient, productive manner; anticipates contingencies and demonstrates flexibility. Excellent organizational skills and pays attention to detail.
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience coaching at the intercollegiate or professional level or commensurate experience
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and effectively interact with diverse populations.
  • Communicates effectively, in one-to-one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts, to diverse constituent groups and through a variety of modalities
  • Maintain First Aid, CPR and AED training
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to establish engaging relationships within and across racialized and other marginalized communities
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University preferred
