Location: Lakewood, Washington (Joint Base Lewis-McChord)
Type: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Full-time, Day shift
Compensation: $40.84/hr

Skookum is seeking a competent and strategic Ground Support Equipment Mechanic to join a team dedicated to supporting our nation’s military service members. Our Fleet Department thrives on strong relationships built by partnership, integrity, and excellence. The Ground Support Equipment Mechanic diagnoses malfunctions and repairs Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Performs receiving inspection on contracted units for annual service.
  • Performs minor/major repairs and services as outlined in established technical manuals.
  • Maintains required work, time, material, and equipment maintenance records to update equipment service workbook and daily task sheets consistent with current contract requirements.
  • Handles emergency or hazardous waste spills.
  • Inspects and approves completed maintenance actions.
  • Uses automated maintenance data systems to monitor maintenance trends Analyzes equipment requirements.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on GSE.
  • Prepares GSE for storage and mobility deployment; and operates, cleans, inspects, and services GSE towing vehicles.
  • In addition to maintaining vehicle records, this mechanic maintains and updates paper and electronic equipment records.
  • Diagnoses mechanical and electronic circuitry malfunctions using visual and auditory senses, test equipment, and technical publications.
  • GSE using conventional and digital multi-meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, circuit card testers, transistor testers, and hand tools.
  • Maintains equipment records, and documents maintenance actions, and analyzes, diagnosis, and repairs.
  • Performs major repair jobs by disassembling and cleaning parts, removing components, removal and installation of assemblies and installation of components.
  • Provides dispatch service for GSE, including positioning equipment to support aircraft maintenance and flying operations.
  • Inspects, tests, and operates GSE to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation.
  • Disassembles and assembles malfunctioning GSE accessories and components, removes, disassembles repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion.
  • Solves repair problems by studying drawings, wiring diagrams and schematics, and technical publications.
  • Reviews parts requests and ensures parts are needed prior to ordering.
  • Reads, understands, and follows technical manuals, lube orders, wiring and hydraulic schematics to ensure proper diagnosis and repair during scheduled services.
  • Maintains external fuel and grounding systems.
  • Performs 10 and 20 level annual inspection to include an initial and final road test (minimum of five miles).
  • Services equipment with fuel, oil, water, coolant, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant, and compressed air.
  • Stores, handles, labels, uses, and disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local, and federal environmental standards and regulations.
  • Instructs/trains employees and new hires on proper procedures pertaining to shop safety, contract maintenance, workbook completion, billable work verses non-billable, safety issues and knowledge of hazmat and a right to know station.
  • Assist Shop Foreman with input when probationary or annual evaluations are due.
  • Practices good housekeeping, tool control, Foreign Object Damage prevention, and safety always.
  • Stencils and marks GSE in accordance with technical publications
  • Services/Repairs and troubleshoots various systems to include brakes, suspension systems, wheels, hubs, and steering systems, Electrical, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
  • Reviews Workbooks, verifying hours to task.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and tools to ensure compliance with established safety procedures.
  • Assembles, and reinstalls GSE components and accessories.
Qualifications:
  • Must be knowledgeable of the regulations on hazardous material, hazardous waste, and the right to know information sheets.
  • Knowledge of Class IX serviceable turn-in and recoverable items.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to use computers and computer software.
  • Minimum three to five (3-5) years light, medium and heavy truck experience.
  • Must have experience with Trucks (Heavy) Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles & Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck. Trucks (Light) High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle: ATV’s, UTV’s Gators & Mules. Trailers, Tugs, SATS, USATS, Forklifts, Generators, Wash Carts and K-Loaders.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers.
Requirements:
  • Valid State Driver’s license required with the ability to obtain and maintain coverage by Skookum’s insurance company.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain applicable security clearances as background checks will be conducted for this position.
  • Must provide personal tools adequate to meet minimum equipment repair requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
